How many days in the grand canyon?

We are visiting the grand canyon for the first time this August. Have reservations in trailer village. How many days do you all suggest we need to see the Grand Canyon. Any suggestions are appreciated

north or south rim? if your going into the canyon are you going to tube or hike thru the bottom. if your going north rim there is some great day trips into southern Utah. might want to find central location and spend a couple weeks exploring the beauty.

However long you stay, it won't be enough. We like to stay in Williams and then you can either take the train or drive into the park. We suggest the train during the busy months

Unless you have plans to do something other than just explore the rim and overlooks into the canyon, (south side) then 3 or 4 days max. If you plan to hike down, or take a mule down, or go somewhere and do something in the area around the canyon, using your camper as a base, well then stay as long as you can.

While it IS NOT what you are asking.. I read many years ago in a magazine that the average person spends just 15 minutes checking out the grand canyon before getting back in the car and moving on... I spent a week there as a kid and still could not get even a piece of it in!

We spent a week rafting thru the GC, a week camping on the north rim and a week camping on the south rim because we could. Loved every minute.

How many days in the grand canyon?

Whatever you do walk at least 1/2 mile or as far as you can down the Bright Angel Trail. Will give you a different prospective of the canyon.

I walked to the bottom -stayed the night at Phantom Ranch back up the next day. I did that when I was 65. Unreal scenery

Staying in trailer village great place to stay to see south rim. If staying on top of the rim a couple days let you see it fairly well.

My wife and I did a 2 week GC and Yellowstone trip several years ago. We were at the GC 4 days and saw pretty much what we wanted to see. We stayed in Williams, so it was a little bit of a drive every day. We spent a half a day at the North rim on our way to Yellowstone. We may go back again and stay longer, at some point, and see some of the surrounding attractions, such as Hoover Dam. Be sure and take 89A down to Sedona. It is a beautiful drive and has some nice trails along the way.

Two years ago we spent four nights at Trailer Village which was about perfect for walking around the South Rim. I could not hike down the trails as I needed a knee replacement which was scheduled for late OCT of that year. So we just spent time on top of the South RIM. We did see elk walking thru our camp sites and made sure we got some photos of the sunset at the south rim. Take advantage of the free shuttle buses and just leave your TV park at the trailer. Enjoy!

The train from Williams is a must-do at least once. One-day rates for AAA, Good Sam or military start at $65/person round trip. Contrary to when most of us were kids, you can no longer drive the most scenic part of the south rim. However, there is a great tram/minibus that runs past each location about every 5 minutes. So, get on or off when and where you want. A surprising number of people stay until about 9:30 or 10:00 p.m. to see and photograph the incredible sunsets and the resulting red glow on the canyon walls. If this is your first time, stick with the south rim IMHO. The north rim is sparsely populated and more rewarding for the hiker or true naturalist. Really great RV campground right next to the beginning portion of the train track...Railside RV Ranch. (Don't worry, there is normally only one train per day.) Enjoy. This will likely not be the only time you go.

Have been there 3 times now. Last time stayed in Williams and took the train in. If you are taking children with you, then do the train. Also the town of Williams is on Old Route 66. Nice shops and places to eat. We recommend 4 to 7 days to explore the area. Depending upon where you are coming from or going to, east of there is the Crater and Painted desert/ Petrified Forrest.

Depends on your activities. August will be mighty hot. I might hike on bright angel trail starting early in the morning, possibly to Indian Gardens where there is water and then return. I am big into photography so I would go to the west side in the bus(you can get on and off as much as you like) from the bright angel lodge area a couple hrs before sunset and to the east in the morning. In the morning I would pick an overlook to arrive at before sunrise, like Yavapai pt or Grandview or one of the others and complete the morning driving to the Desert view watchtower. On a previous trip I did four or five sunrises and sunsets picking a different overlook each time. If you aren't carrying a tripod figure you will have seen enough after couple of trips in each direction. If you have time you could make a big side trip to the indian reservation where they have the glass walkway sticking into the canyon. Haven't done that as I was too busy with photography.

Grand Canyon

Really depends on your health, your availability and your wallet. We stayed at the GC RR RV Park, which was great. Took the train ride up and back with a supplied lunch and bus tour at the Canyon. You can stay up there, take a burro ride to the bottom and other things. The train ride (in the cheapest car, which is great) was fantastic. Downtown Williams is wonderful.. One of the few tourist towns that doesn't try to make you go home broke. Bearizona is a few miles east and should not be missed, as well as a deer park a little farther east on Hwy 40. i was ready to go back the day we returned home.

Aqua

Now matter how long you are planning to stay, be sure you have PLENTY of water with you and leave your pets in AC. Human can dehydrate quickly and pets even faster. Other than that, how long is different for everyone and their interested in doing.

We just left last week after 4 nights, we had an extra day due to our tour got cancelled due to weather. We ended up taking a day trip to Vegas. We saw the south rim, some unbelievable sunsets, ok sunrise. We did start down the bright angel trail but not too far. I don't think we needed any more time than that unless you plan to hike in all the way.

Just a word of caution about hiking in the Canyon! The lower you go, the hotter it gets quickly. The bottom of the canyon is typically a few degrees warmer than Phoenix due to the dark rock and lower elevation. Also, you need permits in advance from the ranger service if you go down overnight. There are usually some permits available during the summer, first come first served. This hike is not for the weak. It can be tough. Miles downhill, then miles back uphill, with the last few.....steep switchbacks.

We spent just a couple days there last summer. Had reservations at Trailer Village, but cancelled them last minute due to they could not guarantee that they would have water. Something happened to their water system. We stayed in Flagstaff, drove to Williams and took the train in. Definitely take the train. Next time we will most likely stay in Williams take the train in and stay at a lodge for a couple days. We'll definitely spend a week there next time.

When I walked to the bottom on February 1, 2014 it was 8 degree at the top & snowing. Snow quit about 1000' down. And the temp at the bottom was 55 Check for permits at Bright Angel Lodge. Some people will turn theirs back in at you can get them last minute. That what I did. I think it was 7.2 mile down one trail and 9.6 mile back up the Bright Angel Trail
