Kansas City, KS to Rapid City, SD

Heading to Mt. Rushmore in summer and wonder if anyone has gone from Kansas City and what route they took. Have two 6 year old grandsons along and wondering if there are things to see along the way. Staying at Custer Crazy Horse CG and will tour from there for a week.

Want to get there fast and enjoy the destination or take the scenic route? Fast route is I 29 to I 90 and the across but hwy 2 across Nebraska (especially west of grand island) is pretty scenic. You can compromise and take i80 to grand island too. There's many places to stop and visit on all the routes too. It just depends on your timeline IMHO.

Yup, head north to I-90 and head west. Easy, peasy.

Going across I-90 thru SD there is the falls in Sioux Falls SD and Mitchell SD with its Corn Palace. Two stops the grandkids and adults both might enjoy.

Going across I-90 takes you through the Badlands and Wall Drug as well.
