Looking for High elevation Rocky Mountain camping for summer

When it gets hot in the plains this summer, we're looking for some jacket weather, cool nights of camping in the Rockies for a couple weeks. Wooded areas, with full WES hookups would be great. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Mueller State Park in Colorado would be a good choice except they only offer electric hookups. The park is at an elevation of 9600 feet so cool nights should be expected. This late in the year getting a reservation might be a problem but it’s worth a try.

Bummer, I was about to share with you dozen areas until you said WES. Its pretty much too late for the good spots from what I understand speaking with camper's who camp only at campsites. Consider boondocking, all you need is an inverter generator, at least 2 batteries to run heater overnight, spare water, and good power/water/waste water management.

Google rv parks in, South Fork/Breckenridge/Aspen for some with FHU's. There is a lot more if you look. FHU is a limiting factor. A multitude of "high up" campgrounds without FHU. Don't wait to long to make reservations though. Not real high up, Durango is nice with interesting things to do including high altitude narrow gage train to Silverton.

When we lived in Denver, our very most favorite location was the Granby/Shadow Mountain reservoir area at the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. Haven't been there for awhile, but always had great fishing, boating, hiking and horseback riding, as well as close to the wonderful Rocky Mountain NP areas.

Just made reservations for Granby last month. You can get sites during the week, but forget it on the weekend. Also no HU's. They won't even let you run a hose to fill your tank. Have to use a jug. Forgot Stillwater has W&E on some sites but good luck booking them.
There are some private campgrounds up there though near Grand Lake. You'd have to search on something like RV Park Reviews and start calling. Another suggestion is over in Gunnison. I know there's a private park or two on the west end of town. Don't know if the Water Wheel is still open, but they are along the Gunnison River, very beautiful area, and also very near Blue Mesa Reservoir. Also Blue Mesa Resort, and there's another but I forget the name of it out by the lake.
Steamboat Springs has a nice park also. Used to be a KOA, but don't think it is anymore. Tough to beat the scenery there. Good luck. Your going to have to search and spend time on the phone because the nice places book solid on the weekends.
Reserve America and Reserve USA do State Parks, and National Forest Service campgrounds.
Correcting this thing again; Eleven Mile Reservoir is also good. Colorado State Park. Have some sites that are Water and Electric and a very clean dump station in the park. Also have to purchase a daily parks pass over and above the cost of camping. Very close to Mueller State Park and near Cripple Creek casinos.

Spruce Lake RV Park in the town of Estes Park is terrific. Full hookups, and located right on the doorstep of Rocky Mountain National Park. If you can get reservations there in July you don't want to miss the annual Rodeo they have right there in town. Much fun.

We stayed at State Forest State Park near Walden, CO. last summer during July. Its at around 8400 ft elevation. We had to run the heater during the night. Was not crowded at all while we were there. You don't have water or sewer hook up but have power at the Ranger Lake cg. You can get water near the entrance and also there is a dump station there. We had a great time, very relaxing.

Turquoise lake outside of Leadville CO. Great location and beautiful views. You won't get a weekend now but a weekday would not be hard.

You might want to try Rio Chama RV park in Chama, NM. Usually cool as they are at 7800 ft elevation and have WES. But they also have a lot of people who come back every year, so you should hurry.

Ridgway State Park has 68 FHU sites just 20 miles north of Ouray and the beginning of the Million Dollar Highway. From the park, you can easily make day trips to Ouray (to swim in the hot springs pool), Silverton (to ride the train), Telluride (to ride the gondola and photograph Bridal Veil Falls), and Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

If you are really adventurous, you can schedule a jeep or ATV trip over Imogene or Black Bear Pass to Telluride. And, if you are a fisherman, Ridgway Reservoir is in the State park, the Uncompahgre River is adjacent to the FHU campground, and high altitude lakes stocked with native cutthroat trout abound in the San Juans. Finally, if you are towing a trailer with a pickup or have a high clearance toad, a great day trip is to go east from the park over the gravel Owl Creek Pass Road to Silver Jack Reservoir and Coxscomb Peak. This route could even include Black Canyon NP and Lake City if you don't mind a long day's drive. Just make sure you have a good topo map of the area--there is no cell service so you won't be dialing up Siri for directions!

We spend a night at Northpark campground near Walden, CO. just two nights ago. It was 41 overnight. It is at 8400 elevation. Has FHU 50A sites. Not a 4 star campground but it was clean and lots of friendly folks. It was a KOA until 3 years ago.

Just got back from Haviland Lake Nat. Forest campground north of Durango, great views and quiet. Older campsites, could use some work, but no real issues. It is a short driving distance from Durango, Ouray, & Silverton.
