Dead Horse is on the other side of the state from Zion. Not like you can just go there today instead. Was at Dead Horse earlier this week, nice place. National Forests haven't been impacted as far as I can tell. Was in the beautiful Fish Lake National Forest today and everything is open. Lots of hiking trails and dry camp areas and all are free and the aspens are turning colors. Can't ask for much more than that except the weather could be a little warmer. We are in Torrey right now and was hoping to do Capital Reef next week and then Bryce and Zion later in the month. Time will tell but we are continuing with our trip anyway because there is lots to do in Utah even without the National Parks.

Just came into Gatlinburg, TN, via 441, and through Smokey Mountain National Park. All the ranger-operated sites are closed, of course, but the pull-offs and hiking trails were all in use. We did see one National Park Service squad car patrolling the highway, and I suppose he was on unpaid duty. God bless America, and hope the gridlock ends soon. Lots of folks need their paychecks!

Had 8 days booked at Fort Pickens NP layed over a few days in Vicksburg (everything closed) found a spot in Big Lagoon SP FL drove more miles than we usually do when we got here the Ranger said be prepared to evacuate because of hurricane Karen. It has been a crazy crazy trip but we have plenty to talk about and found out we are pretty flexible when it comes to altering our plans.

I have a semi-related problem with the shutdown. DW and I are leaving tomorrow for a week in St. Thomas, at my timeshare. Friend of mine was supposed to go with us for the week and split the cost, but he works for U.S. Customs, Immigration, and Border Patrol, which are "essential personnel." So his vacation got cancelled and he has to report for work. So now I get to pay the entire cost of the week. Which sucks.

Congress seriously doesn't have any idea how the decisions they make (or don't) effect the rest of us...

Anybody want to go to St. Thomas on Sunday for a week?

parks closed

arrived in Moab, Utah and the national parks are closed. from what the campground people knew the front gates are closed and no access inside.
will explore Dead Horse, take a drive south and see what's there.
some of us are surprised the national park road is closed, instead of open with n o support persons.

Etc, just spent two weeks in Moab.

La Sal mountain loop drive. Go south from Moab to start it.
Hwy 128.
The drive out to Dead Horse is great too.

Corona Arch is pretty spectacular. Don't miss it.
Fishers towers.
Negro Bills.
Many others.

You can also go to Gemini Bridges via hwy 313 and go the back way to Shafer trail.

We will be down there next week and Dead Horse point is pretty cool. You can get into Arches on ATV trails if of course you have ATV's or a Jeep.

so we have had to find other things, and we did but very disappointing this happened.
would not have figured this is our planning------don't go when there may be a chance the parks will be closed.
this picture was on our travels getting here at Provo campground.
