Wildcat and tom, thanks for the suggestions. Also was wondering, we like to eat local and by that i mean not big chain restaurants. Any suggestions on places to eat. We like paper plates and picnic tables vs waiters and table cloths.....Kevin

I Willcox, Az try the Big Tex BBQ. It's downtown and there is parking on side streets and west of the old Depot.

La Posta in Mesilla (next to Las Cruces), fantastic history and atmosphere. Kranberries in Lordsburg, Ranchers Grill in Deming. All in NM, all casual, all with good prices.

We did that from Vegas a few years ago and had a blast! Here is the web-page I made from the trip. We rented a car and drove around staying at KOA campgrounds in the kamping kabins. Might give you some ideas.

New Mexico/Arizona

The Gila Cliff dwellings was an interesting stop for us in NM -Glenwood NM. Also after that we went to the Biosphere in Oracle Az. Both these place are a 1/2 day stop. And not on lots of people's #1 stops but very educational.

Also Oatman Az is a great stop. 38 mile west of Kingman. The road to get there from Kingman has some tight hairpins. We did it in a 36' coach pulling a car but wife wasn't too happy. Oatman is similar to Tombstone. Gunfight in the street --Oatman has the donkeys that come into town every day. You are allowed to feed them.

Just East of Amarillo Tx is Palo Dura Canyon state park & campground. Really sets the mood for the rest of the trip west
Santa Fe and Taos are worth at least staying a full day in each place. Both have great hole in the wall restaurants.
Winslow AZ is a kick and there's about a 4 star restaurant in the old RR station/museum.

We were just there, definitely worth the time to stop by. And since you mentioned local food, we ate at a terrific BBQ place in Amarillo, Spicy Mike's BBQ Haven, excellent food, (yeah, I know, everywhere in TX has great BBQ).

Bosque Del Apache National Refuge if you are into wildlife and birds....and depending on time of year, they have one of the largest populations of Cranes that migrate through there and spend the winter there. It's off I25 south of Albuquerque.

We always stay at Santa Fe Skies RV Park because it is conveniently located near I-25 and NM-599 (the west loop around town to US 285), but far enough from the highways to be relatively quiet. It is also not far from a big Walmart when re-provisioning is needed. We stay in Taos, not Red River, at the Taos Valley RV Park. We were at both RV parks last October and at Santa Fe Skies again in January on our way down to Las Cruces for a month of snowbirding.
