Our Trip to the Tetons

Here are a few photos from our trip to the Tetons.

On the way to GTNP we stopped at a rest stop that had a fenced pet walk area. I included this photo because there is no way I would let a pet use that area, it looks like rattlesnake environment to me. Moot point though since we don’t have a pet.



We also stopped at a scenic view along the way to use the facilities we have in our trailer. I have this exact same photo with our two previous fifth wheels.



Just before making the right turn from hwy 26 onto hwy 191 we drove over the Snake river. There were power poles running parallel to the river and on top of one of the poles there was an Osprey sitting on a nest. Just before I took this photo a Kingfisher showed up. While this photo might not be the best, it’s one of my favorites from our trip.



We stayed at the Colter Bay RV park, this is the one with full hookups. While there are a lot of trees in the park we didn’t have any real issues with low branches or having room for our opposing slideouts.



I can’t post photos of the Tetons without including this photo of Mount Moran reflecting in the water at Oxbow Bend on the Snake River.



I'll be posting more photos when I have time. Tomorrow we're heading to Rend Lake in IL for the Art and Wine Festival.

A few more photos from our trip to the Tetons.

Idaho was experiencing some terrible forest fires during the time we were in the Tetons. Because of those fires, the dam on Jackson Lake was releasing maximum amounts of water from the lake into the Snake River. The river feeds the Palisades Reservoir in Idaho where the water was urgently needed.



This major release of water caused the lake level to drop to a point that Colter Bay was left high and dry.



No matter the weather or where you are in GTNP the scenery is fantastic. This is a photo I took at a turnout on the drive to the top of Signal Mountain.

Great pics. I love living in wyoming. The Tetons are only three hours from my house.

I believe the dam opening and Colter Bay drying up is because of Idaho potato farmers needing water down stream for irigation and not to combat fires. This happens every year, I believe. There are rumors of Colter Bay Marina shutting down for good because of the tourist impact when what you see takes place. The Jackson Lake Dam was paid for by Idaho and there were strings attached which include irigation rights. At least that is my understanding of the situation. It's quite sad.

Actually I heard the potato story too but I thought the fire story was more dramatic so I went with it.

More pics from our trip

I think it was Wednesday when we decided to drive south and have lunch in Jackson, WY. Just passed the Glacier View turnout on hwy 191 a mother Grizzly and her three cubs crossed the road. I played the devil getting my camera out and only managed a few fleeting shots of the bears before they disappeared in the brush. I was really disappointed that I didn’t get better shots of the bears, mostly just bear butts.







In Jackson we did some touristy things and then ate lunch at a restaurant just across the street from the town square park. Naturally I had to have my photo taken by one of the antler arch entrances to the park.



After lunch I thought about taking a ride in the stage coach but decided to pass.

What great photo's and narrative for each. Just love to see people doing what they bought a trailer for. You will always have great memory's. Thanks I enjoyed your travel log. But I might have had to go on that stage coach. The first travel trailer. Always wondered how they ride? people where tough in those days. OC might remember them......

We visited the area for the first time in August and were amazed by the sights. Wished we could have spent more than two weeks out there.

Those are fantastic pics, I really enjoyed the bears, some people never get a chance to see them like that. Looks like you had a great trip. Thanks for sharing !

Yes I do. And all I can say is those explorers should have taken at least one woman with them. It takes quite the imagination to come up with that name unless of course you haven't seen a woman for quite a while.

Since we’re spending a few extra days here at Rend Lake I thought I’d try to finish this little report of our trip to the Tetons. My Internet connection here isn’t the best.

We did hike a couple of trails while we were in the Tetons. Joyce wanted to take the hike to Hidden Falls so we drove over to Jenny Lake and took the boat across the lake to where the hiking trail begins. The trail is rated as moderate but some sections were very rocky so the footing wasn’t the best. Here are a few pics from that hike.

Once at the falls I decided to hike the additional half mile up to Inspiration Point. This trail is more strenuous with a steeper grade. I don’t recommend this trail for anyone who has issues with height. The last 75 yards are on the side of a cliff with a steep drop-off. I’m not bothered by heights but I sure didn’t like meeting other hikers coming down on that section of the trail. Here’s a photo of that section.

One of the other hikes we took was the trail along String Lake and Leigh Lake. There was a warning on the Leigh Lake trail that there was Black bear activity in the area and to report any sightings to the park rangers. While we did see a bear along the trail we didn’t bother to report it. Here are a few pics from this hike. I love the scenery of the Tetons.



I really like trails that have benches along the way where you can sit and just enjoy the beautiful view.





Here’s a photo of the bear we encountered on the trail. I have no idea how he came to be there or even why he was there so we left him alone.



We spent a total of 4 days at Grand Teton National Park and then departed for Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone where we had reservations for 11 days. I’ll probably take the time to post some photos from our time in YNP when we get back home later this week.
