You don't mention if your looking for the most direct, fastest or most scenic route. We're fans of two lane scenic by-ways.So here's a thought. Over the top of RMNP on hwy 34 to Granby. Then hwy 40 through Craig. Nice city park in Craig for lunch. Then to Vernal UT. You might want to overnight in Vernal or. From there hwy 44 to Flaming Gorge Natl Rec Area. Really nice camp grounds before you set off for Hwy 373 to Rock Springs Wyoming.
Out of Rock Springs take hwy 187 north (several spots to stop for lunch) to Jackson Hole. Once there you're only Forty miles or so from Grand Teton Natl Park. Same fee gets you into Teton and Yellowstone. I can tell you Teton is not to be missed. Jenny Lake, and numerous Snake River views plus several great campgrounds. From there you are due north to the south entrance to Yellowstone. What a great first trip. Here's some photos. If you'd like more details just send me a message.

I guess I should have added, there is lot to see in Yellowstone between the South entrance and the West entrance. West Yellowstone town is right at the west entrance.
Very scenic route for sure.

Canonman - thanks for the reply and pics! We are currently staying close to Rocky Mountain national park - the park is incredible. We are leaving for Yellowstone tomorrow morning and will be taking your advice on the travel route, thank you very much! Can't wait to see the Grand Tetons. Have a great week!

You are most welcome. I'm sure you'll enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
Don't forget to stop in Craig CO and check out the city park. I won't spoil the surprise but they had pretty cool idea on how to deal with some tree removal.

If you're anywhere by Estes Park or Allens Park you may want to check out the St Malo church if you haven't already.

I am very envious as we had to cancel a planned Yellowstone trip for this weekend.

Thanks Canonman for the terrific photos. Oakman and I will be going to Colorado Springs for the FROG rally and then our own trip to the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Those are my very favorite places to visit.

Geez, we were there last year when the Waldo Canyon Fire broke out. We'll be careful. Thanks.
