Roswell
Leaving Phoenix in the morning for home. Wife has stated she would like to stop in Roswell to see the aliens.
Can anyone tell me what route 70 is like going from Las Cruces to Roswell
It appears to be a Nice drive but just want to hear from someone that has driven it. TIA.

70 is pretty good. In fact I think NM has some of the better state highways around.

Thanks, Chief T. One more question. Would this be considered mountain driving. I have never been to NM so I have no idea.

I don't know that direction. But US70 from the 60 split south of Amarillo, all the way to Roswell, is one fine 4 lane divided highway. Plus, there are 230,089,979 antelope to look at. It's all at about 4,000 feet, but no hills.
When you get to Elida, stop at Allsups and tell 'em I said hello.
And I have not been in 4 years, but I think Roswell is the cleanest city in America.
Aliens are at the 4 corners of downtown. That's about it. Several "alien stores". Walmart has a little section with some drawings.
If you can find the Red Onion, do not be put off by the look..........go have breakfast. Trust me on this one.

I'm assuming you are taking I-10 to Las Cruces and then 70.
You will have a pretty long climb out of Benson through Texas Canyon. Then a shorter, but more steep climb on the other side of Las Cruces going over the Organ Pass. From Tularosa through Ruidoso is a medium climb.
All climbs and subsequent downhills are very doable if you just take your time.
The drive through the Ruidoso area is very nice. I would spend some time there if I was you. The Roswell alien museum is a definite spot to stop at, but you will see everything to see there in about an hour or two.
Have fun and be sure to try some Alien Ale!!

Agreed. Alien days is a great festival to go to. Trouble is, it's only one weekend a year (July 4th holiday).

Loved our visit last April to Roswell, NM. Great place to visit. UFO Museum was a lot of fun. McDonald's built like a UFO...
If you have the time, try to visit the Bitter Lake NWR.
https://www.fws.gov/refuge/bitter_lake/
Have fun looking for little hidden UFO gems all around town.

Since you'll be on 70, a stop at White Sands is well worth it.

We've driven this route and U.S. 70 from Las Cruces to Roswell is a pretty drive. You cross San Augustine Pass into the Tularosa Valley. If you have time, stop at White Sands National Monument along the way between San Augustine Pass and Alamogordo. There is a Border Patrol check point near the foot of San Augustine pass on the Alamogordo side. The road to Ruidoso is not a bad climb. The grade isn't too bad to Apache Summit from Tularosa and is a modest down-grade to Ruidoso. This is a very scenic area full of history (e.g. Smokey the Bear at Capitan, Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War) and lots of nice RV Parks. I would stay in Ruidoso in the cool pines and drive down to Roswell to see the "aliens". Safe travels!

If you are staying at the Trailer Village RV in Roswell, I think Debbie is the owner, very nice people. All gravel and a bit dusty, but pretty handy location.
Tell my people hello...

We had a great time in Roswell and camping at the Trailer Village RV park. As you said, great people. We still have our inflatable little green person we purchased at Trailer Village. We put it in the driver's seat when we tow our Jeep! LOL
Enjoy!

Roswell is a neat town but if you want to see REAL aliens, head to Las Vegas. They're all over the place but especially on the "strip" and Fremont St.
The cab drivers say that every day is Halloween in Vegas.

Hi, came from Roswell on our way to Elephants Butte. Rt 70 is a great road through Alamogordo and up through Rusidio. Through the mountains outside of Las Cruses and through the mountains towards Rusidio elevation about 7000’ but a gradual climb. Great roads all over New Mexico. Make sure you stop in White Sands National Monument on the way.

We were very unimpressed by Roswell, it was ok but no great shakes. We took a trip to the Billy The Kid museum which was great. White sands was a must see and don’t pass up three rivers petroglyph site!

Yeah, Roswell is NOT a tourist destination - unless you're nuts about aliens that is. Next time ask them: "Tiene una targeta verde?" The only aliens you see around there are mostly illegal.

I think you mean 'tarjeta verde' for green card. We like Roswell for some of their festivals, but you are correct about there not being much to do there otherwise. And I'm thinking Texas probably has more aliens of every kind
