RV'ing in National Forests near the Bay Area? Just find a spot? Is it possible?
Hello! We just picked up our 201BHXL this weekend and have a few reservations lined up - about one per month for the next 3 months. Very excited! We'd like to also find a place to go for the in-between weekends when we don't have reservations if we happen to find ourselves motivated to take the RV out.
I hear that if you can camp on National Forest Land without reservations - just have to find a nice spot and set up. Has anyone done this? Is it easy to find suitable, flat enough spots? Any recommendations for areas to check out?
Most of the National forests you can just find a wide spot and camp (off the main roads). No fees and lots of times no Rangers.
Mendocino National forest has lots of great spots. Not the quick and easy paved campground stuff that is close in. You need to drive a bit. Best to camp in the regular easy campground and explore in a truck or a car until you get familiar with the area.
Check out Mt. Madonna. It is between Gilroy and Watsonville on top of the mountain. It is a county park. Lots of trees, paved roads, nice sites. It is a Santa Clara County park. You can reserve sites on line.
