Tehachapi, CA to Portland, OR

I like to know about other peoples experiences who have taken similar trips to Portland and back. Needing to know how steep are the grades. And recommendations for rest stops/areas. We're planning to leave this Wednesday.

Just left Seaside, stayed at the Circle Creek at the south end of Seaside - not bad. All the state parks campgrounds on the coast are booked up every week-end so don't plan on staying at them. Most of the RV parks in Seaside seem to be very cramped, Cannon Beach may be better. Essentially, make sure you have somewhere to go before you get there.

My DW just made the reservations at Cannon Beach RV resort for 20th and 21st. TOWTA and her son did some research and calling up places. They settled on this, I guess it was the right call. Would like to know how steep the mountain grades are between Portland and where I live, closest city is Bakersfield. Just to calm my nerves and avoid the white knuckle driving

Didn't go in to Cannon Beach RV Resort, but marked it for future reference. Only drawback might be it's other side of US101 to the beach. Don't know about the grades, we'll be onto I5 tomorrow heading South so it'll be 'suck it and see' for me. I've got until Sunday to get back to AZ, so I'm not rushing anyway.

Thanks, we will review that campground when we leave there. The fees are reasonable, no different than staying at Pismo State Beach. KOA cost more out there but with less features.
And if you travel through Tehachapi, there is a Loves travel center at the last exit to town, it is very RV friendly and has a dump station as well. I've downloaded the Loves app should come in handy.

Dave

We stayed at Cape Kiwanda south of Cannon Beach. Great spot. Sheltered beach and fun to watch them launch boats from the sand.

The worst part of this drive for us is through Ashland and the Siskiyou Mountains, nasty uphill climb, but we made it through and currently driveway camping before we head out to camping at Cannon Beach.

We take 97 out of weed, no steep hills and you get to go down the canyon following the river on hwy 84, from biggs junction to Portland.

Would this also work heading back to California?

Its is a beautiful drive from Portland to Biggs Junction, make sure you stop at the multinoma falls, there are 5 falls, worth seeing at least three. Hood River is a nice town to visit. There is a climb out of biggs junction to the top of the hill. Stop near Madris and stand in the middle of a large circle of rocks, each aligning with a major mountain, I think there are seven. There is the very deep canyon north of Bend. A lot to see, we love the back roads, you miss so much on the freeways. ENJOY

We just did all those grades from Redding,Ca. to Canyonville Or. and it was in the high 90's- up to 101 while on those 7% grades. Nasty is right. We felt after those mountains and heat we would be ready for anything now.

101 south, west of Portland is a great drive, Coos Bay, Bandon, Port orford, Gold Beach, Brookings, stop at harris beach state park. Its GREAT. Oregon has some nice state parks. Then on into the redwoods in Ca. We have spent two weeks there and still missed a lot.
We live in a beautiful country, if you just slow down enough to see it.
