We took that route last month, traveling from Spearfish SD to Cody. Very scenic route. Just took my time and kept speeds / trans temperatures to a minimum with safety in mind.

14A is great if your passenger(s) are not too squeamish. Even with my Afib my DW trusts me so it was a fun drive. Of course, the driver does not get to see much scenery and as I recall there are no pull-outs. We did 14, 14A and 16 and enjoyed all three. We boondocked a mile off the road at the summit of 16 (9600 feet). Had 2" of hail in July. There is a nice campground (dry only) south off of 14 at 44deg 33' 02.04" by 107deg 30' 50.16". It's at 7500 feet.

If you go through Lovell and like horses, stop at the Pryor Mountain Wild Mustang Center. For about $200 per person you can be transported to the top of Pryor Mountain (in summer) in a 4WD where you can almost rub elbows with 150 Wild Mustangs (they put on quite a show with stallions trying to steal mares from competitors). It's an all-day trip but includes lunch with wild mustangs wandering nearby. http://slickpic.us/2160629,zwz

There is a free (voluntary contribution) campground in Lovell (water and dump only).

14 or 16

I just made the same trip using 16 towing a 30 ft TT with a 2500 HD diesel; this is very LONG and steep grade. I didn't catch what you are pulling or pulling with, but you should be able to do it. Just take it slow and low. BTW, this rout ended up being some of the most beautiful scenery and landscape we have ever seen; awestruck!

X2. We did the whole area in a gas 2500 HD pulling a 30 foot 9000 pound "Ultra-lite" with no problem (and no rush).

Follow-up after trip

Just got back from our west trip and wanted to follow-up on the choice to take US-16 over the Big Horn Mountains. I was/am new to driving over mountains with such long steep grades with low mph turns, so I was apprehensive. First, thanks for all the advice. Let me start by saying it wasn't difficult, but it wasn't a Sunday drive through the park either. Some have remarked at how scenic the drive is - I was too busy making sure I didn't screw up to notice - not actually true, but I wasn't as able to enjoy it as my passengers were. The Ram 2500 with the 6.4L V8 and 6 speeds had no troubles with the ~9000lb trailer. - Let me repeat - Thanks for the Advice!

Glad it went well. What route did you decide on?

I wonder if that 20 mile 5 percent grade is the longest continuous state highway grade in the country. It is the longest I have been one. I am with you on no sight seeing while towing. My eyes are focused on the road at all times when traveling in the mountains.
