Trip Recommendatons

Hello all. We are getting ready to take off on a trip we’ve been planning for the last 6 months or so and are looking for recommendations from you seasoned travelers about any off the grid or must see places you’ve seen on your travels. Our plan is to take 3 days to cross Nevada and into Utah on the Loneliest Road in America (Hwy 50) stopping in Moab & vicinity for about 10 days or so. Then…

1) Dropping down to Mesa Verde in Colorado for a few days
2) Going through the 4 corners region and up into Monument Valley for a few days
3) Continuing west to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for 3 days
4) Then heading north past Zion NP into Bryce Canyon NP for a couple of days hiking
5) From Bryce we’ll bomb north to Yellowstone NP, stopping overnight at Sandy, UT.
6) We’ll stay in Yellowstone’s Madison campground for 2 weeks where we’ll meet up w/ friends.
7) After that we’ll drop down into Grand Teton NP and hopefully get a couple spots in Colter Bay

No firm plans after that. We may head home, or decide to check out the Flaming Gorge area, depending how we’re feeling at the time. We have reservations at most planned stops, but we have purposely left our itinerary flexible enough to explore as we go. I appreciate your taking the time to read this long post and will look forward to any insight you can provide. Thanks much and safe travels.

I hope you have reservations at Arches NP. The campground is at the end of the road and beautiful. The best part of the NP's is in the early morning and late afternoon or evening. The crowds are down and the sunsets are outstanding. National Forests are great for camping, especially if you don't require electricity. Mostly you can't reserve them but they are often quiet, beautiful and less expensive. We used an app that has only public campgrounds. Cost a few $ but priceless. I will find it and post. Solar is great for the SW. You should find that as hot as it is during the day, it cools off at night. We only wished we had AC once because we were at a low elevation, but did not have electricity. Stock a few cases of water.

Check out the petroglyphs around Moab.
Visit Canyonlands NP just north of Moab.
Drive one of the offroad trails near Moab. There are several jeep rental shops if you don't want to take your truck.

There are several slot canyons in and near Zion NP that are nice day hikes.

A nice daytrip in Yellowstone is to drive up thru the Lamar Valley, out the NE entrance and partway up the Beartooth Highway (at least to the pass). Retrace you path backdown the highway and take the Chief Joseph highway into Cody. Have dinner in Cody then travel west out of Cody to the East entrance of Yellowstone.

After July, you might want to go up to Glacier NP and travel the Going to the Sun Highway (or take the red bus tour).

Check the road restrictions for rvs at Zion National Park before you go.

Sounds like a great trip! When we're doing your type of traveling, we consult our Garmin GPS for interesting attractions that only show up when we are in an area. Recreation.gov also has lots of suggestions based on your interests. There's never enough time to see everything in that area.

Safe journey.
