Trip to Yellowstone National Park questions
My wife and I are planning a trip to Yellowstone Park in September. We will probably arrive there around the 15th and plan to stay at least a week. We are thinking about staying at Grizzly RV park in West Yellowstone and take day trips from there. Is this a good RV park? Will the park be busy at this time of the year? Would there be a better place to stay and use as our base? What is your favorite place to visit while there? Thanks.
Don

we were there in '09, about the 2nd week of Sept.
the problem staying in the park around that time, is some of the major campgrounds are closed by then.
i would stay at Madison and Canyon.
Madison for the west side of the loop and Canyon for the north end of the park and the east side of the loop.
don't miss Old Faithful/Geyser Basin and the Grand Canyon of YNP.
we didn't make it up to Mammoth, even though we were there a week.
the road between Madison and Canyon was closed so we had to move to Grant to visit the east side and only got as far north as the Canyon area.

Grizzly RV park is an excellent RV park. It's location is just two blocks from the West Entrance to Yellowstone.
Here's a photo I took at Grizzly RV park last August.
I don't have a favorite place to visit other than the entire park. When you visit Old Faithful Geyser be sure to go into the lobby of the Old Faithful Inn, it's really impressive. As a matter of fact, one of my favorite spots for viewing and eruption of the geyser is on the second floor veranda of the Inn with an adult beverage in my hand. You don't have to be a guest at the Inn to use the second floor veranda.
Here's a pic of Old Faithful erupting that I took from the veranda.
I also love to visit the Lower Falls on the Yellowstone River. You can view these falls from a number of different vantage points, including a short, steep trail that ends right at the top of the falls.
Here's a pic I took last year of the Lower Falls.
Here's a photo of the viewing area at the brink of the Lower Falls.

if u have the time and a regular size vehicle (in other words, i wouldn't try this with a motor home) make a trip out the NE entrance on US 212 over bear tooth pass. very scenic. pay attention to the the speed limits in the little town just outside the gate, they have police roaming the street watching traffic.
u may have already discovered this but if u stay in Cody or Jackson Hole, u have a long drive to Yellowstone.
we saw the campground on the west side (in Idaho?). thought that may have been a good choice but did not go in. would like to know what u find as well.

Was ther the last time in 2009. Stayed over by Henry's Lake, but Grizzly R. V. Park looks much nicer. Doesn't seem as impressive as it was back in the 70's and 80's. Lots of pots and stuff have dried up. Mammoth Hot Springs used to be very impressive, but now just a couple of streams comming down the formation. Yellow Stone is well worth the trip tho. School will be back in session, but there will still be alot of foreigners running around. Wayne

We stayed at Fishing Bridge campground in June, almost in the center of the park. Full hookups, but electricity was limited to 1/2 of the sites. We booked in January.
We thought it was a great location, a great base camp.
Good luck

We recently got back from a 5 week trip out west and must say that Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons were our favorite parks as far as beauty and especially wildlife go. We stayed at Grizzly RV Park and found it to be one of the nicest campgrounds we stayed at plus the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I dropped our fifth wheel and traveled into the park each day. However, some people were driving their motorhomes and TT around inside the park. The Grand Tetons are very close by so be sure not to miss. As Oakman stated the campground is only a couple of blocks from the west entrance.
