Weekend warrior reservations, wing it for a spot, or boondock?

Every year we find it more difficult to find open camp spots on the weekends around our beautiful state. I've used ReserveAmerica in the past but really dislike the fee they charge for a reservation for two nights.

Do others reserve for weekends, or just wing it and hope for walk up spots? We've started boondocking more since we can decide last minute (the week prior) of where we would like to go.

Some of the CGs we like offer a small number of walk-ins so we try to leave on Thursday evenings and camp for 3 days.

How do others schedule their weekend getaways?

we start booking 6 months in advance and give ourselves reminders on our phones

One of our favorite places has 50 percent of the reservations first come first serve, so if we have to, we just leave on thursday night and set up the night before. I find it seems like a longer trip if we get settled the night before and "wake up camping"

Weekend warrior reservations, wing it for a spot, or boondock?

I book most trips over holidays in January. All weekend trips locally I just reserve week before to a couple days before. I have a few state parks close to me if a site is not avail at one should be able to get one at one of the others. We came 95% at state parks so sometimes depending on time of year or if you want a certain lot we need to reserve early. Local ones we have started going on Thursday night and going to work on Friday and just coming home to the campsite.

I've been very impressed w Colorado State Parks and how clean and maintained the facilities are. We have two large ones in Denver and they are booked solid from Memorial Day thru Labor Day. We prefer the mountains w no A/C required.
