Where should we go?

We are new in the RV world and need some advice. We are starting to plan our 3rd trip for August 2011, and we are not sure where we should go. We will be towing our motorcycles, and bringing our dogs. We do not want to go to Sturgis; we'll save that for another year. We were thinking somewhere in New Mexico or Colorado. We live in St. Louis and would like to head west. Any suggestions as to where to stay? Thanks anyone and everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I love denver colorado. Great wonderful place. Not too hot not too cold. If you go I will be jealous. I'm lucky to make it out of the state in 2011.

Denver has lots of greats things with scenic routes.

Depending upon what you are looking for, New Mexico has a lot of variety - from mountains to desert. We live in Albuquerque and have camped in most of the State's parks, as well as on much of the federal lands. You can find a lot of information about the various NM State parks at Index. In August the northern parks will give you a little cooler weather than those in the South (we like it hot - just like our green chile!). Two I would suggest considering are Oliver Lee (near Alamogordo) or City of Rocks (south of Silver City) in the South. An often overlooked (and usually quiet) location is on BLM land just off of Hwy 60 close to the AZ/NM border - Datil Well Recreation area. You will also find good info at the BLM website Field Office Recreation Areas. For using your motorcyles you might like Dunes OHV area, south of Farmington, or Mescalero Sands near Roswell (plus Roswell has the great 'alien' attractions - you can actually trek out to the "UFO crash site" on a nearby ranch). You'll find those in the "Farmington" and "Roswell" Field Office areas on the BLM site.

Moab Utah has awesome state and national parks.
Neat little town with good restaurants, shopping etc.
Also good scenic motorcycle riding.

Canyonlands NP
Dead Horse Point state park.
(We think the views at Dead Horse SP are as good
or better than north rim of the Grand Canyon)
All close together.

Colorado;
The Crystal River Valley north of Glenwood Springs. In the valley leading to Marble (yes, there is a marble quarry there, and it is huge), there are some riverside campgrounds. Also a cmpground in the town of Marble. Rent a jeep/quad and ride into the mountains, awesome scenery. Ride to the top of Sheep Mountain, and sit on the edge of a 3000-foot cliff overlooking the Crystal River, it will take your breath away.

The National Parks in Southern Utah are great.

I will 2nd southern Utah, lot to see in somewhat of a small area. Arches, Bryce, Zion and a host of others.

Can't beat the scenic areas around Leadville, CO summer or fall. Then you have San Juan mountains in the Ouray and Silverton area. Come to the San Juans in September for the fall colors . The Aspens are beautiful.

I'll give you another vote for Moab and Southern Utah. You could stop at Mesa Verde in Western CO and then go on check out something that most people don't get an opportunity to go.....the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Uncrowded and a totally different view than the South Rim. From there head up to Moab and Arches and Canyonlands. While in Moab be sure to take the Hummer ride through Slick Rock. It's a neat experience.

How about Rocky Mountain National Park and then south to Pikes Peak and the Colorado Springs area? There is a lot to see and do in Colorado.

If you are taking your dogs, you can forget the National Parks. Their policy is very anti-dog. They are not allowed on trails nor can they be left in your camper while you go do something. The only alternative is to kennel them.

My reco is National Forest Service. The Rosevelt National Forest just West of Ft. Collins is AWESOME. Cool at night; low humidity; great hiking. You can take your dogs with you on the trails. You will meet hardly anyone and the scenery is spectacular.

If within your travel radius, I also highly recommend the National Forest Service campgrounds in the Big Horns in Wyoming. Numerous great campgrounds. A bit more remote than Colorado IMO. We love it there.

We live in Western Colorado, one of our favorite places is Ridgeway State Park, close to the San Juans, boating, fishing, and with your motorcycles some of the best country to ride. It is cool in the summer and one area is open all winter for winter sports, also the Ouray and Silverton areas are within an hours drive or so away, where there is the hot springs pool, and some of the most beautiful country in the world in my humble opinion, and the million dollar highway 550 is breathtaking to ride. There is a 14 day limit to stay in the park, parts of the park are full hookups, and part are electric only but, has good dump station. Check it out in Colorado State Parks, also you are only four or five hours drive away from Moab Utah, also some great country to ride. Also the Grand Mesa, Colorado National Monument in Grand Junction Co where we reside, is only two hours away from Ridgeway, great winerys, lots of fresh fruit and peaches to die for in late summer. There are two very nice RV parks in Grand Junction and two state parks in Grand Junction,

Colorado has many state campgrounds that are great and one of our favorites is Steamboat Lake. We just love Rocky Mt Natl park. We usually stay at the Morraine park campground which is on the Estes Park side. We have been here for 5 yrs and the camping here is awesome!

Ouray-Telluride-Silverton and Lake City-Creede-South Fork areas and the San Juan mountains, either in the Spring or Fall for colors. We stay at the KOA north out of Ouray towards Ridgeway State Park.

Great motorcycle riding, Silver Thread Highway, etc, Great for jeeping and off-roading on both sides of The Million Dollar highway between Silverton and Ouray.

Lots of Ghost towns and abandoned mines. You'll stay busy during your stay with all the activities available.

I know all the areas you are showing, great pictures, we have stayed at the KOA there, but we perfer Rideway State Park, we also love to go to the San Luis Valley, beautiful there, and you are right there are many beautiful places to visit, we are chicken to drive Red Mountain Pass, will do it in truck or car but, not pulling our fifer. Lived in Denver for years and traveled most of the eastern parts of Co, love Rocky Mountain Park, you should check out the Grand Junction area, more of a desert but, lots to see and do, many jeep trails and such, and if you like wine some of the best!

Hey Pete ,
Were you at the Ouray KOA last year? We were there the first of August when the Cafe' was open. We have been camping there for over 12years. We normally stay in site 69 or 70 on the north side of the canal. We really enjoy driving in the San Juan mountains. Our other camping city is Leadville at SugarLoafin campground.
