Last year I went to Yellowstone from Salt Lake along the route you are contemplating. I didn't see anything that would prevent you from going that way.

On the way home, I went south past the Grand Tetons and into Jackson before returning to Salt Lake.

The trip to Yellowstone through Idaho, heading east into the west entrance is the quickest route from Salt Lake. The trip back via Grand Tetons and Jackson is far more interesting, though it does take longer.

Oakman,

I was going to make reservation at Rafter J campgrounds in Cody, did not reliaze that is over 50 miles from East Gate. do you know any RV park closer beside staying inside the park. Or is my best bet camping at the West gate side.

There is a National Forest Service (NFS) campground called Three Mile Campground just three miles from the east gate of Yellowstone. There are no hookups and I canít remember if potable water was available at the campground or not. It has been many years since I drove through that campground. That campground only has 20 sites and may already be booked solid for June.

If you need full hookups and want to stay on the east side of the park then I donít know of any campgrounds closer than Cody, WY.

There are a number of campgrounds just outside the west gate in West Yellowstone, MT. The nicest of those parks is Yellowstone Grizzly RV park but it is pricey. A slightly cheaper option would be Buffalo Crossing RV park which is just a block away from Grizzly. It is basically a gravel parking lot with full hookups and right next to the IMAX theater. There are a number of other RV parks in the West Yellowstone area but I donít know much about those.

Another option for full hookups would be Headwaters Lodge and Cabins which was formerly called Flagg Ranch. They are just outside the south gate of Yellowstone and have 50 amp full hookups and are located between Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park.

Just outside the Roosevelt Gate on the north side of the park is Gardiner, Montana and it has two campgrounds right in the town.

Regardless of where you stay I hope you have a great time in Yellowstone.

Dutch, We stayed at Yellowstone Valley Inn in 2013. Nice CG with a great view. Full hook up, 25 mi. from the east entrance. They also have a great resturant. I recomend the pork chops. My DW would recomend the spaghetti . Enjoy your trip.

National forest service Wapiti campground is about halfway between Cody and the east entrance and has electrical hookups on the eastern loop. Has a few drive through spots for big rigs and a lot of back in sites.

Take some warm clothes. I was in Yellowstone in mid-June in 1990 and 1994 and it snowed both times. Unless global warming (excuse me - "climate change") is helping, it will probably be chilly.
