Yellowstone ?? East or West entrance

Need some advice, (read all the reviews) we are traveling to yellowstone(next summer) all the way from Florida was wondering is it worth the extra 2-3 hour drive going from the east entrance to the west entrance to stay at Grizzly vs fishing Bridge(FH).

We just returned from Yellowston in June and drove there in our Georgetown and pulling our toad.

This is what I suggest. Come in the south entrance of The Grand Tetons, It is located just north of Jackson Hole.

Driving into the Tetons north is a great day drive. If you can get reservations I'd suggest to stay at Colter Bay RV Campground for 1 or 2 nights. Great location alonf Jackson Lake.

Then when you are refreshed you drive north out of the Grand Tetons and into the south entrance of Yellowstone. Nice road and scenery and you will see animals as you get further north.

You drive then out the west entrance of Yellowstone to Grizzly RV Campground. It is a great safe place to stay. We spend 5 nights there and say all parts of Yellowstone.

After you do this you may want to exit the north east entrance or the SE entrance on your way back to Florida. That way you always are seeing new areas.

For what its worth, we went this summer to Yellowstone. We stayed on the west side and did day trips for a week. We came in from the east and stayed in the KOA in West Yellowstone.The trip was a little slow at times because of the tight roads and switchbacks. It was a great trip and great scenery for us. I am not sure you can do bad from either side. We also went to Glacier National Park. It was also a great place.

we just came from west yellowstone. we stayed in grizzly rv park it's very nice may be a bit pricey. everything in town is pricey so stock up before getting there. we did day trips. the south loop is 122 miles roundtrip from grizzly and the north loop was 126 miles. old faithful is on the south loop.

We just got back from Yellowstone and we stayed in Gardiner, Montana. It totally depends on what you want to see and do. We stayed at Rocky Mountain RV Park. Gardiner is a nice small town with good restaurants. We took day trips around the park but especially like the Lamar Valley for animal watching-saw bison, elk, bears, wolves, antelope, etc. Manmouth Hot Springs is very close by. You can also make a day trip to the Bear Tooth Hwy. which is unforgetable!

Have not camped in Yellowstone, but have family that live just outside the NE entrance in Cooke City. No trip is complete until you drive the Beartooth Highway from Cooke City to Red Lodge, and/or Chief Joseph Highway into Cody, WY. Absolute beautiful scenery. You will also travel through Lamar Valley, which you will see herds of Buffys and Elk. In late June you can watch the "red dogs" (baby bison) play. The act just like puppies.

Came in from the East Gate: Awesome because first five minutes in we saw a Grizzly.

Bad, it is a climb through Big Horn Mountain Pass.

I learned that lesson.

We were in Yellowstone in July went out the south east entrance and regretted it, lots of steep climbs coming in as mention before the South entrance is probably the easier climb to the park. Grizzly RV park is a nice park close to the main downtown of West Yellowstone. We didn't call for reservations but they still were able to get us a site.

My wife and I stayed at Fishing Bridge for 7 days this past June. Then went and stayed 7 days at the Grand Tetons, then 7 Days in Glacier, then own to Mt. Rushmore in SD among other places. Between all the places we went and day trips we went through every entrance of Yellowstone. It really depends on where you are coming from, or going to after the park.

Staying at Fishing Bridge is nice, but it is a no frills rv park, and it is about 60 miles one way to reach Old Faithful. Also, keep in mind that 1) Fishing Bridge is the only Full Hook Up facility within the part, 2) Pretty much every entrance requires at least 20 miles of driving until you reach any 'attractions' so to say, and 3) There is fuel inside the park, and it was over $4 when we were there.

Staying at Fishing Bridge was ok for us, but there was a lot of time spent in the truck just getting too and from various places. We could have spent way more than 7 days there, it just depends on what you want to see. If you want to stay at Fishing Bridge, be sure you book it well in advance. I booked it in January, and at that point there was only one full week available for us to stay all summer. So, we built our trip around that week.

Edit: The West Entrance was by far the busiest entrance we went through! LOOONNNGGG lines to get in!

I did not care for the Fishing Bridge. Camping spots were way to close together. We only stayed there one night then moved to Grizzly. They had the cleans restrooms I have seen anywhere.

You can't be in a hurry when you travel through the park. It takes typically 4-6hrs to travel a loop, without stopping(exiting vehicle to site see), during peak times. If you are traveling to a destination for a specific time, be sure to leave plenty early.

It has been a few years since we visited & we like to dry camp. Fishing Bridge is like setting on the Baltimore (or insert any city) beltway during rush hour, bumper to bumper parked RV's. However as already posted, it does have hookups if that is a requirement. The camps on the park loop are wonderful but full. We were lucky & found an open slot from someone who had just pulled out. If you can get a spot in the park, that is where I would recommend.

Oh yes, take your time & enjoy it. It is a great park.

Thanks for the great pics and info, actually spoke with someone from grizzly today and i think we're convinced to stay there, like everyone says its a drive anywhere thru the park , whats another hour or so for the better campground after driving all the way from Florida! We'll be arriving the end of August so hopefully it will be a little less crowded.

Wish we were going now!!
