yellowstone in early sept..temps? busy?

so my wife and i are looking at our schedule and we BOTH have off labor day weekend so we thought what the heck....take off 2 weeks and go check out yellowstone.

been combing through thread after thread bout the place...lots of good advice on sites and places to visit......actually im kinda overwhelmed!! lol..normally just getting to the destination pretty much sum up my planning..haha...

anyway, we figured since school would be back in session it would be less busy?? no?.....

also, whar kind of temps can we expect? is this a good time to go or is there a more optimal time to enjoy the outside weather? we will be taking our 2yr old along, so even though we enjoy the more extreme level of hiking/mtn biking/climbing/camping,....this trip will be geared a little more conservative/laid back/fun/sights and views oriented....and also a certain level of camping comfort is required...ie temperature management (wether by ac or heater and we have generators if necesssary)...cold is no big deal as we have heat regardless, but if we will need ac that requires hookups or genny running?

i have not figured out much, as setting the dates is step one and we JUST did that....lol...and i havent been to yellowstone in about 30 years and last time i was a kid and we just did i drive by looking at some things....

now with a family and a 36ft trailer its gooing to be a lil different!!

Sept is probably the best time to go. It is less crowded. The temps are starting to drop some but still comfortable, cool nights/warm days.

for weather, check out wunderground.com - you can get historical weather info such as the averages, the usual highs and lows for any city and time of year. I did when we planned our trip to Yellowstone several years ago (we went in June).

Gotta agree with Aquaman (ohh that hurts to say).

Sept is a great time to visit. The nights can get down in the thirties but the days warm up quickly.

It would be my first choice of time to visit!

Awesome! Thanks for the tip galsofescape ill check that out!...looks like Sept is good to go...now to figure out the whole "where to stay " thing...??..hmm....? Prob have to move at least once to be close to minimize driving right?..I definitely want to see Tetons and the main sights at yellow...but I hate being on a fixed and crowded schedule...just makes u feel so beat at the end of the day..and anyone with a 2 yr old knows that THEY for sure could care less about yiur SCHEDULE..lol

In June the weather in Yellowstone was wonderful, it was light jacket weather in the day and we had some frosty mornings. The most beautiful clear blue skies. Still had snow on the ground in the high passes but did not need coats. And it was what we were expecting from what I got from wunderground. The crowds were just beginning to build too, each day closer to the 4th of July, there were more people.

Yes, we had coats just in case too. but did not use them.

hey thanks for the tip.....that site has a lot of data!!! early to mid sept is looking PERFECT for what i like ....upper 60s to mid 70s for highs and gets into 30-40 at night...school is back so it shoud not be too busy.

if the temp forcast is even somewhat accurate, i should not even need any ac, just heat so we can pretty much stay anywhere as i dont see any need for full hookup sites...

now to read through all these threads AGAIN and figure out where to stay and see if they take reservations or what i have to do!

I am not sure you ever need AC in Yellowstone. You are at quite an elevation - the lowlands are around 6000 ft above sea level. Yes, it is overwhelming. We want to go back as we did not see it all. BTW, the Yellowstone park pass includes Teton National Park.....

Yes..we will most definitely go back once the daughter is older and can really appreciate it for wgat it is. The tetons are on theb def to do list...would also like to hike as much as possible while backpacking my 2yr old or if trails allow our off road stroller (mtn bike like stroller)....so I imagine some places/views will be too narrow or steep...im not worried about us...I hiked at 8k on ski slopes with my daughter on my back while playing disc golf!!.lol

We are thinking about going to Yellowstone in June or Sept. Have looked up different campgrounds. Does anyone have suggestions on which ones that would be good for us as we have a 34' fifth wheel?

If you plan to stay in the park, Fishing Bridge is the only campground with full hookups within the park. Other campgrounds that would work for your size rig are Madison and Grant. The one campground I don’t like for the bigger rigs is Bridge Bay, just too tight. I managed to damage my truck trying to get into a site at Bridge Bay.
If you plan to stay outside the park then Grizzly RV Park, just a couple of blocks from the west entrance, is very nice…but a bit pricey. Slightly cheaper and just a block away from Grizzly is the Buffalo Crossing RV park, fewer amenities too.

We picked and booked for June, just hope we do not grow water wings.

September is a great time to visit Yellowstone. The crowds are definitely gone. You do need to check with the park to see what consessions are open. While the park itself is open not everything open and what is open may not have a great selection if you need any supplies. I've been there in both May and September and encountered this problem. Also, plan for cold. I've gotten into some good snows only to be sweating hard a day or so later. Enjoy.

That's exactly what I was wondering. ..I was looking at bridge bay last night. Our lacrosse is 35+ total too... so avoid that one huh? ?.. we don't have to have hookups.... would rather have a larger /nicer site... as long as I can run a genny once a day I can make do fine.. will be spending a couple nights in the tetons before we hit yellowstone first week of sept..

Mammoth would be another campground that could handle your rig.

Of the campgrounds that allow generators the hours are usually 8AM to 8PM and the park service is very strict with those who forget and run them outside those hours.

When I call for reservations I always tell them my trailer is 2 feet longer than it really is hoping I get a much larger site.

I stayed several nights in Yellowstone at fishing bridge on two occasions, both in September. 2005 and 2013. Both times we saw snow falling one or more days and had short sleeve days in the same week. Mostly pleasant days and chilly nights.







These were taken sept 2013. Long sleeves, light jackets.
