Yellowstone NP Dangers

Looks like it will be a long season for the park rangers at Yellowstone NP. 10 days ago there was a bear incident in the park and thankfully there were no injuries. This past Friday a young girl was gored by a Bison and fortunately she will recover. Yesterday a man was VERY lucky he didn’t fall to his death at the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. He fell 25 feet but was able to stop his fall just before he would have gone off a cliff. IMO, the greater Yellowstone area is the most beautiful and interesting place in the lower 48 states but you have to understand the dangers when you visit. Photos are courtesy of the NP.

There's a great book titled "Death In Yellowstone-Accidents and Foolhardiness In The First National Park". I bought the paperback version in the late 1990s on a trip there and last year found it on Kindle and re-read it and now have it in my Kindle library. It is worth a read!

Was that the second edition on Kindle? The first edition covers deaths up to 1995, the second edition covers up to 2012.

Years ago we were at Old Faithful walking back form the general store to the lodge (all manicured grass, sidewalks and parking lots) and next to the sidewalk was a bison eating grass. People were walking within 5 feet of him. I took the family around through the parking lot (parked cars between me and the bison). About an hour later a guy was gored at that spot (I figure the bison was counting and he was lucky number 1000). I have also seen people walk up to take photos of bears... Amazed!

I know some rangers who pulled duty at Yellowstone, and like most other major, western NPs, there tend to be a lot of idiots that do not understand what the term "wildlife" means.

I have been in Yellowstone about 12 times in my life and I do not have enough fingers and toes to count the number of close encounters I have seen with people and animals.

Although I replied yesterday that the Kindle edition of "Death In Yellowstone" was from 2012, it turned out that the Kindle edition is the 1995 version of the book just made Kindle ready in 2012. I didn't see that the mentioned updated version is on Kindle. Still a good book of the things people do, and what NOBODY reading this forum should ever do!

Day 2 in Yellowstone we saw a bunch of cars parked on the side of the road and stopped. Went down to a river where we saw this giant grizzly sleeping off eating half a deer. A ranger yelled at us saying that bear can run 35 miles an hour. I looked at the group of people and said to the wife, "don't worry honey, we can run faster than half these people".

First lesson about dealing with bears: Food runs. You run, you must be food.

Saw this guy in Alaska, he thought he could intimidate a 12 passenger van, he was right.

You'll love it! If you get a chance, do the Beartooth Highway, out the northeast exit from Yellowstone to Red Lodge MT.

We love to visit the National Parks in our area and are often amazed at what people will do just out of sheer ignorance of their surroundings. My favorite Ranger response to a guest's concerns about the dangers of hiking the Angel's Landing trail in Zion: "Well, this ain't Disneyland ma'm"
