Yellowstone summer

We are staying at the ponderosa beginning June 15' 2017 for minimum 14 days. It is our first time and want to make day trips. We want to see as much as possible by vehicle. We are coming from Georgia....rest of our journey will be south in the Tetons and silver ton, co.

Any hints, advice appreciated

I take it for granted you are talking about the campground in Cody, WY. Cody is a very interesting town and worth visiting but for touring Yellowstone I would have picked a campground much closer to the park.

I agree, the drive from Cody to Yellowstone's east entrance is about an hour on a good day, and into the fishing bridge area of the park about 2 -3 hours depending on how many crazies are stopping traffic for selfies.

However, from Cody it is a nice drive up to Red Lodge MT, from there you can drive the Beartooth parkway and circle back to Cody via Chief Joseph highway for a nice day trip.

But that drive into Yellowstone will get old quick. Back in '86, I was at a lodge about two miles form the entrance and for five days drove into Yellowstone and it got old really quick.

I would suggest a few days in Cody, then switch to a park somewhere, either in the park or outside the West entrance. Just my idea.

Current conditions this morning (May 18th) at the West Entrance to Yellowstone NP. Yep, that's snow on the ground.

Years ago before winter trips into YNP was allowed the park didn't open till after June 6th. This is one reason why.

Oh how I wish I was there. That’s a screenshot of one of the Yellowstone NP webcams. We still haven’t dewinterized our trailer and don’t know when we will. I think this is why I’m looking at so many camping webcams…I want to go camping. Wife had a knee operation and we’re waiting for that to heal. Getting old ain't for wimps.

I've been to Yellowstone twice, both in mid-June. It was snowing both times. So make sure your prepared and dressed appropriately!

As to snow in Yellowstone--I've been there many times in the winter. And a few times in the summer. To me it is much prettier in the winter.

Before the park got "politically correct" we were allowed to ride out personal snowmobile thru the park. 45 MPH speed limit. Then they require us to have four-strike motors. Next you had to have a certified guide. Then you had to have a guide and use only rented snowmobiles.

Last time I was there we snowmobiles outside the park and took one of those snow coaches into the park on a guided trip. I would recommend the snow coach to anyone as a way to see the park in the winter. Really beautiful.

That looks like a great trip. Judging from your list I guess you won't be heading to Goshen this year. We'll miss ya.

We'll be out there later in the summer.

We'll be making a swing through the mid west with stops at:

Badlands NP
Mt Rushmore
Devil's Tower
Yellowstone NP
Tetons NP
Rocky Mountain NP
Denver, CO to visit family
