Acme Tow Dolly

Does anyone have experience with the Acme Tow Dolly?

When we got our Georgetown 7 weeks ago we decided that we wanted to tow 4 down. After 7 weeks we have changed our minds. The basic cost for the cheapest items to convert a 4WD vehicle to tow it 4 down for the base plate, receivers, cables, and tow bar is 1465, add tail lights and a breaking system and you are up to 3185 and only 1170 can be easily moved to the next car, if it is 4wd! And, 4wd’s and heavier and more expensive that 2wd’s!

The Acme tow dolly is 1600 with 350 shipping. No mods to the car being towed so the whole thing can be reused on another car or sold after using it.

Before we buy one, does anyone here have experience with their hydraulic disk brake dolly? Is it worth it for towing a small front wheel drive car or truck? How much trouble is it if you can’t get a pull through site?

There are sever good threads over on IRV2 that cover the Acme dolly plus Acme follows and responds there as well.

Another question!

We are really newbies to a motor home, our Georgetown has about 1,100 miles on it so far. Is there a break in period befre you can start towing a car?

Most owner's manual recommend 500 miles before towing, so you should be good.

I was going to order an acme tow dolly, but on a whim I called my RV Dealer and asked if they had any used tow dollies for sale. They had a bunch to my surprise. I picked up a Kar Kaddy SS for less than I was going to pay for the Acme Dolly.

I know that didn't answer your question, but thought it was worth putting out there.

As far as the supplemental brakes...I would recommend them...under normal conditions you might not need them, but if you ever have to "hard Brake" you will be glad you have them, they will allow the MH to brake its weight while the dolly will brake the weight of the tow vehicle....resulting in a reduced distance to stop.

I have an acme tow dolly and I like it a lot. I have the surge brakes and they work fine. I have used mine for around 1200 miles now. It really isn't hard to hook & unhook. I find the safety chains alittle challenging, but not too bad. I pull a 2013 Ford Edge and I don't even know its back there. I have to check once in awhile with the rear camera...lol ) One thing you should do is stop after a few miles and tighten down the wheel straps. Give it a couple more clicks.

I second Roger.

I picked up the Acme Tow Dolly this spring to tow a Chevy Volt. I don't even know it's back there. I was super impressed with the Acme and its construction.

Just make certain that any Acme product is coyote tested and roadrunner approved

I use a Master Tow Dolly. 4th season and zero problems. Surge breaks are the best. Radial tires also. Same cost but no shipping charge. I picked it up from a dealer.

Had great luck with the Acme but it is made for front wheel drive cars only. Works great and easy to load.

Just got rid of mine and got the Acme because the Master Tow was tearing up the side of the minivan.

I use a car dolly and it really doesn't bother me if I can't get a pull through site. I just pull up just past my site, unhook the car, and then unhook the dolly and park it at the back of my site. Then I back the MH into the site, over the dolly - which keeps it safe. When I start to leave I just pull up a few feet and hook up the dolly. Once I'm straight on the street I pull the car up on it. Really not that bad.

Master Tow dolly here. Like the plastic fenders and the swivel deck which helps the turning radius. Trempert, did you have the HD 80 which is the heavy duty model, meaning a wider fit? No problems with DW's RAV4. We have been using it now on year 5, time for new straps.

Yes. Ruined my 2014 Honda. Beware to others.

Thing I like about the Acme is that it slips in under the rear of my motor home, out of the way when I'm parked at the RV park. None of the others do that.

Ditto, but so did my Master Tow.

Last week in Cape Cod we had a 37 ft. long campsite with our 34.5 ft. Georgetown. Master Tow parked behind the RV tongue underneath and backed to the fenders. Perfect fit!
