Awning extended whilst driving !!!!!!

Hiya,

Whilst driving back to our home base our Weather Pro power awning decided to fully extend whilst travelling at 60 mph, the first I knew something was wrong was when I heard a loud pop, one of those attention grabbing noises, my first reaction was to look in the drivers mirror, could not see anything wrong then looked in the passenger mirror, oh dear lordy what the **** is happening. The whole awning was fully extended and before I could stop the complete awning was ripped from the side of the coach with the exception of the front arm that holds the the wind sensor.

What you have to understand is that this happened in the UK so the awning was extended over the other driving lane, fortunately the following vehicles saw what was about to happen and managed to stop and avoid the mangled remains of the awning.

I have driven over 5,000 miles in the coach and have never had this problem before, has anyone had or heard of this problem happening.

John

I've never have heard of that before. As it's a power awning, you could pull the 12V fuse in the control panel to prevent it from occurring again. I can't understand how it would open while in transit?

Do you have an electric awning or a mechanical one?

As soon as Herk showed the remote awing control to me I wanted one. After reading this I will be adding a kill switch if there is not one already. I can see it now someone will use some remote for something else or I will sit on it and out will come the awning

All that stuff, plus arms not properly seated. Known to happen on mechanical systems. Ask me how I know!

I have seen this before on a manual system. Helped a person roll his back up after it had started to come unrolled.

When we purchased our last used 5th wheel from a neighbor, he used sections of 4 inch sewer pipe to protect his awning from unrolling. Basically he cut the sewer pipe into 5 inch sections then cut them lengthwise and popped 2 of these on the awning.

Ever since Herk reported on his little episode, I have been contemplating a mechanical lock for the power awning with the remote. I do store the fob inside the camper until we are set up, but when you are hooked up, someone's remote just might trigger it. The mech. lock might cause a burned up motor, but I carry a spare. Yea, I really do.

How did you get your Georgetown to the UK? Was this posted on April 1st?

I am thinking of putting an interlock on ours that when I plug the trailer into the truck it energizes a relay interlock that disables power to the awning ccts.
