Backup Camera Disappointment

We have a 2003 GT with a backup camera.

We are disappointed in it. It only points down so we can see the hitch area, not much behind it.

A friend of ours just purchased another MH and their backup camera had a much wider angle, where you can clearly see behind the MH for quite a ways.

Add to this the monitor is poor, difficult to see things clearly, and can barely read the menu items on the screen.

Are others like this ?

Perhaps I can replace the whole setup, if so any suggestions on what system to use.

I understand some of the earlier backup camera systems were not so great. I have a 2010 Georgetown with the 3 camera system and really like it so far. It should not be to hard to replace yours with newer system.

Ours is excellent. Also it's mounted on a bracket and can be adjusted to point further out if one wishes. Only thing I would like to have is range lines on the display so I know the distance from objects. I just use the wife for that now. If I am going to be really close to something she walks back and keeps an eye on things. Since we have sound through the camera I can hear her say "whooa" or direct me when backing to hitch up the boat.

Ours is so well centered that when backing up to get the boat, if I center the boat on the "Jensen" symbol at the bottom of my monitor I am directly in line with the hitch, just have to have the wife say when to stop.

Backup Camera

What brand are in the newer Georgetown?

I would think I can replace the Camera & monitor and use the existing wires.

I just don't know if they have standard sized monitors or not.

Any suggestions on what camera & Monitor I should be looking for?

Ours is a Jensen VR187, in dash stereo with flip up monitor. I don't know what the camera is but I belive it is available separately. My Mother-in-law has the same camera she bought years ago for her truck. I would think you can just use the existing wiring.

I have the VR187 in dash unit as well and a Voyager B&W camera. They are good when working properly. I have on occasion had a problem with the in dash unit losing vertical hold. No problem with the camera other than it gets dirty from water getting kicked up while travelling.

I have a question on the camera. When I put on the brakes the monitor goes to the left camera view. Can I change that setting?

Ummm, Yeah, that's not right, shouldn't do that. I would have dealer fix under warranty..

I'm not sure how the 3 camera systems work or are wired, but if this is the B&W voyager system the rear camera should be connected to the camera 1 port on the monitor. Otherwise it will override the switch on the front if you hit the brakes, reverse, etc and force it to port 1. Other monitor systems may require certain wiring as well.
