Battery compartment

I noticed the battery box compartment isn't a compartment but open to the road elements etc that the passenger side tire can kick up. While I understand the battery area needs some ventilation the complete open exposes the fuses, battery components to the elements. Has anyone installed walls, like built a ventilated type compartment? If so what did you use, plastic, thick rubber? I'm thinking of doing something like that to keep it a little cleaner. This just seems like an area where a short cut was taken or not alot of thought.
