Bedroom Cabinet Mod 351DS

I've seen a couple of variations on removing the TV in the bedroom of our 351 on this site and making a usable space. Thanks to those for the ideas! I went a slightly different route.

I first removed the TV from behind via that small access panel in closet. Removed the top drawers under the panel where TV was. Using a light and viewing the back of panel through access I realized that large board is attached by staples all around perimeter. Stapled from rear towards front into back of face frame.

I used a pry bar and started at one of the lower corners and pried off that entire panel without damaging face frame and without cutting any wood.

Next made backing frames with 2"x2" wood and cut a board for a shelf from 1/2" plywood.

I used 1/4" birch plywood and made side panels. Installed a low voltage box and a new outlet as others have done. I then installed 3 hinges on right side face frame with a small backing strip. Cut a tongue and grooved pine board to size to have 1/8" of clearance on all sides of face frame and installed.

I cut out holes for wiring, stained everything and mounted TV on board.

That just left strapping the cables so not to pinch when opening and closing.

I did recess it about an inch and raised it 2.5".

You can access side plugs also.
I used a spring roller latch to keep it closed.

Wow, nice job! Makes me want to do that to mine this winter. That is a large space that FR wasted by mounting the TV the way they did.

Nice mod, I am planning on the same improvement.
Have you had any issues with the door swinging open on rough roads or does the spring latch hold it securely closed?

Haven't had it out yet to test it. We have a 400 mile trip to fort wilderness planned next week so will know. I adjusted the latch to tightest setting and it takes a good tug to open door. I have a second one left so I can add it if needed. Works great right now. I'll update later.

Excellent pictures and description. I have this mod on my list as well and now I don't have to figure it all out on my own! Sweet!

The latch to keep it shut was the only thing I was worried about, I'll be interested to hear how it does on the road.

Thanks for posting the pics and description!

You wonder why they did not do this from the factory.. Especially like in the 364 they did it over the sink!!! Lazy I guess

Very nice only one thing is the spring roller latch strong enough to keep it closed while going down the road. That's my only concern, is a good idea and looks good, I hate wasted space. Good job

Well we're at fort wilderness. Rolled about 400 miles. No issues with TV coming open while driving.

Funny thing is forgot we have storage there. Used it 3 days later after we were on our trip. 👍

Thanks for the update
Now, how to find the time for the modification.
This past weekend I finished putting LEDs on the coach.
On to Kerrville tomorrow.
