Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

Arrived yesterday in our '14 377XL for a week at Toms Cove on Chincoteague for the annual Pony Penning. As usual no problems whatsoever!! But, while going through the tunnels one of the AC shrouds hit the ceiling of the tunnel probably 5 or 6 times . Not hard enough to do any damage, but somewhat disconcerting none the less. This happened in both northbound tunnels. Has anyone else had this happen ??

Copied this from the attached link; How tall is your rig?

Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel -- GATED LANES

Both of the tunnels can only accommodate a maximum height of 13’6”. District personnel have to inspect and measure any vehicle over that height requirement so that the driver can be turned around or properly adjust the height of the truck. Typically, this happens about 15 times per day. Allowing a truck to go unchecked is not only a safety issue but could also be very expensive.

You sure it wasn't the radio antenna hitting the tunnel ceiling occasionally? Seems like it would have damaged ac shrouds or more if direct hit. Our antenna goes another foot higher than shrouds.

I thought that your propane tank would be restricted in the tunnels...

Propane tanks are not prohibited. The requirement is they be shut off.

You can go through tunnels but LP must be turned off. We are always ask by the toll attendants if our gas is shut off.

There's a tunnel (or two) in the Baltimore area that allow ZERO propane. There'a also a tunnel (or two) in the Virginia Beach area (other than the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel) where you MUST stop and have a uniformed municipal employee manually check / ensure that your propane is turned off before using the tunnel.

Baltimore tunnel rules:
Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) govern the transport of hazardous materials across our toll facilities. Under these regulations, vehicles carrying bottled propane gas in excess of 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895). The Francis Scott Key Bridge (I-695, the Baltimore Beltway) is a convenient alternative route for crossing Baltimore's Harbor.

Well I'd use "convenient" sparingly - it will add about 40 minutes to your drive time.

Living in Delaware we head south fairly often and (almost) always take the Key Bridge because of our propane. Coming home yesterday traffic was RIDICULOUS and we absolutely could not change lanes to take the bridge home and decided we'd just take the tunnel and pay whatever fine was levied on the other side. Luckily for us no one stopped to check what was under the large black propane tank covers on the front of our trailer.

We went down to VA Beach last year and we went over the BBT, and didn't have any issues with height or propane, they just asked us if it was off. 2 weeks ago, we went to Williamsburg and went down 301 through DE and across the bay bridge, but coming home we came up 95 and then 695 around the Baltimore tunnel and back on to 95 N for the test of the way back to CT. We never had any issues with height or propane when going through tunnels.

So MD allows motorists to carry up to 100 pounds of propane as long as said motorist uses ten, ten pound containers? Makes no sense to me.

As a life long Marylander, a lot of things here are like that.

This is an expensive ticket; don't ask how I know.

It is a pain to go around but I guess it is all part of the journey... I have thought about stashing the cylinder under my bed cover and running no tanks up front just to avoid the traffic though.. Never had the balls to actually do it though. We did need to stop a few times when going to VB as well to show we were off. Just stopped right before, shut off, then back on once we were through. Gotta love that city job.. Talk about waste of tax money.

As for the original question. When I was a medic our unit was 10' and some change. When we went into a few ER's the roof two way antennas would scrape along the roof. It sounded like the "curb feelers" from back in the old days (LOL SORRY!). First time I heard it I though the roof was coming off but the way they drug it resonated down the aerial and vibrated the roof.

The ticket is "Risking a Catastrophe" and not a moving violation. You get the same ticket if you drove a truckload of high explosives through.

To go around the beltway (Rt. 695) and cross the Key Bridge instead of going thru the Harbor Tunnel (Rt, 895) adds 6 miles to your trip.
