Clarion NX501 Software/Navigation update

When I was traveling a few weeks ago, I noticed there where several roads that where not on the map, so I thought a quick download....boom new roads

So, Today while I was at CW, I decided I would take the SD card out of my navigation and do a quick software update.

I started the process at about 1130am EST. First I had to download the Naviextras Toolbox software onto my laptop. then purchase the latest map software. That was the EASY part.

Then I started downloading the software to the 4GB SD card from the Clarion unit. It is now 1630(4:30PM) and this thing is still going. I did stop for an hour to drive from CW to my house.

The first delays came because I needed 4 software updates not related to the new maps I had purchased. Then when it started doing the updates I purchased, the Naviextras software said I didn't have enough space on my SD card. I had to deselect States I have no intention of visiting in the near future so they would not be included, plus I had to un-install South America, not driving there anytime soon, and finally I had enough space to install the update.

I suppose I could have acquired a larger SD card, but didn't feel I needed to since I wasn't actually adding any software, just updating what was already there.

Each State map is about 11-12MB, and the software downloads POI's Addresses, and Speed data separately.

So, the point of the post is:
1. if you decide to do this, make time...not a few hours before you are leaving for a trip.
2. you should at least do the system updates to you Clarion system and get them out of the way when you have time.
3. you will need a computer that can read/write to a microSD card or a USB cable to connect from your computer to the Head unit.
4. Make sure you have a strong stable Internet connection. I ended up having to stop at the CW because the connection was weak and slow.

BTW, My 2014 MH software was from 2011.

Happy motoring.

Also the type od SD card matters. If it is a cheap one it will be slower.
You want a fast transfer you need at least a Class 6 or higher. 10 is what I use for video.
The number is located on the label usually in side the logo letter C

SD Memory Card

Speed Class
High Speed Bus I/FFull HD video recording HD still consecutive recording

Normal Bus I/FHD ~ Full HD video recording

SD video recording

Iggy,

The units come with a class 10. The issue was simply the size of the upgrades and updates. You would think with a 140Mbps download speed it would be lightning fast....not the case here. It is likely because the software is coming from somewhere in Europe.

Yah. My Garmin GPS takes an hour to upgrade with new maps from my computer.
