Cleaning windshield using steel wool

I have heard that you can do this with 0000 steel wool. Would like to hear from any others who have done this... Thanks

Yes completely safe, I bought a pack to do the RV but didn't get to it yet. Did it on cars no problem.

I do it before the Rainex coating.

Nooooo. The little particals will rust and speckel anything they get on! Bronze wool is harmless in this regard and softer on the glass. But,its your vehicle,do what u want.

Bull feathers. Just use it dry, never any water or other liquid.

As long as you don't ever drive in the rain I would guess that would be true...

I've had the best luck with wet used dryer sheets. They don't damage clear plastic headlights either, good for front cap bugs and other areas.

I second the used dryer sheets. They work great and they're 'free'.

He wasn't suggesting using it wet when polishing.
He was saying, during the polishing process, fine pieces and specs of steel wool will come off and get in the cracks and crevices of the vehicle and they will then rust (when they get wet) and you'll have a mess.

Maybe after use a good dusting with compressed air is in order.
That's what I've always done.

He also suggested using bronze wool instead.

I always wash it after and never had an issue. I just find that some people slide into doomsday scenarios over anything.

In any case I've said my piece so I'm done with this thread.

Old gas station trick, when they used to be "service" stations: Use some wadded up newspaper to clean the windows instead of paper towels or rags. The old newspaper is slightly abrasive, and cleans bugs off easily after spraying windshield with water or window cleaner. My Dad and uncle both owned service stations, and we recycled all of our newspapers in this manner. Customers always left the station with a nice clean windshield.

There are a few videos on YouTube about "super cleaning" your windshield ...

Another idea

I have always used carnuba auto wax on windows with nylon net sponge (also for cars). Good cleaning and bug removal, streak free removal and nice coat on the glass for water repellent with wipers. No chance to damage glass

Yes. There are tutorials on YouTube for this. One on applying Rainex specifically described this technique. It is how I now do it, to great results.

My problem isn't the bugs, but the black marker connecting the dots. DW gets angry when I use her sharpie on the windshield.
