You never said what year/model you had. I just looked at Kelly Blue Book. I put in a 2016 Fiat 500 "1957 Edition Hatchback" (which they said was the most expensive model) in blue exterior and used 20,000 miles. It came back as $9,083 - $10860 trade-in; $11,158 - $13,459 private party. My location, of course.

You may want to do the same with the actual year and model and your location see what you get, but it sure looks like a total loss to me. Get your insurance to pay you for it and just buy a new one.

I am taking it home to Canada in a week where I can get my mechanic to repair with used or reconditioned parts. Hopefully that will cost less than the dealership estimate which included all new parts.

Checked with insurance and was told it is not covered.

Yes, I already did the replacement investigation, and unless we can repair for less than the estimate it is a complete loss.

If you haven't learned it yet, dealers cost at least TWICE what the rest of the world charges for repairs. You WILL do a lot better at your mechanic. Good luck!

I'm really bummed that your insurance would not cover the damage caused by flat towing your vehicle in gear.

Are you 100% you left it in gear or could it have popped in gear by itself when the car hit a pothole or dip in the road?

Your situation was an accident due to negligence (simple negligence in my book). Insurance covers more serious forms of negligence all of that time that reusltin accident losses. Not sure why they won't cover this.

I would find a way to appeal your insurance decision.

Good luck!

If you leave your awning out in the wind and it gets torn off your camper it gets covered. An accident due to negligence. Same difference. I would press hard to get it covered, or at the very least shop for new proper coverage.

I didn't catch what year the car is but to put another $12K into it would not be good IMHO. I would remove the tow bar and just leave it or tow it to a scrap yard and sell the remains.

The car is a 2016 Fiat 500. I am getting an estimate now with used parts from my Canadian mechanic, I am currently in Florida and need to leave next week.

Are you still able to flat tow it, or will you have to trailer it?

Don't worry about any pieces that might be floating around in the transmission. They'll just get ground into smaller pieces while towing😁

FWIW, Just looked at e-bay. Complete engines are selling for $500-$800 usd. Being sold by recyclers from cars that have been parted out usually due to accidents.

Looks like you may escape from this problem for far less than the dealer estimate.

I bought my son a used 2012 Fiat special edition 007, meaning 7th one produced in Mexico and 7th one to arrive in Quebec Canada.

They omitted a starter bolt that served to ground it. This caused a high voltage current to pass through the journal bearing, which eventually welded it in place.

This was a known issue and Fiat Chrysler refused to warranty it, I should have sued.

The long and the short of it is that we picked up a used engine from the local scrap yard for $500 (with core trade in) and did the swap. It’s quite an adventure but a mechanic should take no more than 2 full days to do it. Not sure how much a tranny is but you don’t pay extra to have it installed.

In fact you may save money because they need to come out together. Your mechanic would spend more time doing the engine swap alone because he would need to separate the tranny, like we did, and then mount it to the new engine.

My scrap yard had a bunch of engines 2 years ago and gives a 3 month warranty. Not sure where in Canada you are but if it’s any where near Quebec, you’re in luck.

PM me for info. if you need their address.

By the way, we buttoned up that 2012 and drove it straight to the dealer, who was fully aware of the swap. We traded it in for a 1 year old fully loaded Abarrh and I can honestly say that driving the Abarrh is the most fun I have with my clothes on.

We recently reprogrammed the ÉCU and added about 70hp. The car is insane. I know people knock on them a lot but we love them so much that I bought my daughter a 500 lounge convertible.

Final update: Sold the car as-is, and purchased a new Chev Spark. Now just need to get the towing equipment installed.

By way of introducing myself, make that 5 others.

I know for a fact that we had our 2015 500 Sport in neutral. We got to our destination, and the clutch pedal went to the floor and stuck. This happened in January, two months after we had a new clutch assembly installed because of a failed clutch diaphragm spring. FCA repaired the clutch under warranty - goodwill, they said - but now they're quoting $11,000 for a transmission and engine. Interestingly, the first failure was after the recall work was performed.

We're still under warranty at 28k miles. FCA is dragging it's heels, while crying the car was towed in gear. I would be interested in hearing your outcome.

Cheers,
Andy

The difference was I had it in neutral and it actually went into gear while towing and blew up the engine and transmission.
Total loss and salvaged car.
It sucked the valves and broke them off and they dropped into the cylinders
Her is what the engine cylinders looked like.
The funny past was it was just after Fiat did the Clutch pedal recall item.
But I had no way to prove it was that clutch pedal recall that caused the transmission to go into gear.

I know of 4 other Fiat Pop that this has happened to in 2016 and 2017.
