Differential replacement costs?

Has anyone had or know someone who had their Georgetown differential fail and replaced?

No not mine but I was trying to get an idea of the cost for him.

I would call a local truck repair shop or a local re builder of truck rears. The actual labor to r and r should be only 2 or 3 hours. No more. It is a matter of disconnecting the driveshaft, draining the oil, removing the axles, and removing the rear. I would get 1 from a reputable re builder with a warranty.

My friend got a quote of $5,000 with very little details.
He is checking around for another quote now.

The whole housing and gear set, axles, bearings, etc?

Or just the ring and pinion?

$5000 sounds like dealer pricing. Should be half. Or less.

Rock Auto has a typical F53 ring and pinion for $400.00.

So figure.... bearings, miscellaneous stuff, lube and let's be generous, 5 hours of labor.

Let's say there is $300.00 extra in lube and bearings and stuff.

Then, let's figure the shop rate is $150.00/hr.

$700.00 + $750.00 = $1,450.00 total.

$5,000.00 is a-holes preying on the ignorant.

Well having ran ford drill rigs 5 grand is about right
The problem with the rear end ford uses is when there is an issue they tend to snap the axle also right by the difference destroying everything
The last used assembly I bought was 1500 bucks plus axles

Wait! Read the thread. Iggy said its just the main gear assembly. That's the ring & pinion gears. Not snapped axles, etc.

Update
The mechanic says it is only the bearings that failed and not the differential gear itself.

So he is now waiting for an estimate for pulling the axles.
Replacing the bearings and seals and reinstall with new gear oil.
I will let you know how much it will cost him so we know for future reference.

$500.00 - $600.00 max.

Otherwise they're gouging.

So far everything CheckSix has said in both his posts is pretty accurate and about what I've charged.
Rear carrier bearing replacement is not hard just time consuming. I'd also replace pinion bearings and axle bearings depending on if the oil at the hubs show signs of contamination.
