Dometic Refrigerator Recall

Ok I looked up my refrigerator and it is a number in the expanded recall list. Can a normal person tell if the recall work has been completed?

Hi I don't like that if I do 8 to 10 hours of driving and have the refrigerator
Running on gas, all day ,is there a way I can put in a inverter to run the ref.

I know what you are talking about. I am no expert, I think it can be done.

I believe the AC heater on the refrigerator in our Solera is rated at 320 watts. Seems like you could get and hook up a 400+ watt inverter and plug the refrigerator into the inverter.
You would also need a way to turn off the inverter so the fridge would switch to gas when camping without hookups (maybe just unplug it), and possibly a way to connect the fridge directly to AC when camping with hookups (again, maybe just move the plug from the inverter to an AC outlet).

I suggest that you get a larger inverter like 1000 so it can easily handle the initial startup of the unit which is significantly more draw than when it is already running.

Assuming it is an absorption refrigerator like the one in our Solera, the 120 volt electric operation is an electric heater (instead of the gas flame) to heat the ammonia mixture in the cooling loop. Unlike a freon compressor based refrigerator, no inductive load so no initial current surge.

Ok but what batteries do I hook it up to ? Can I come off the coach batteries ? it won't interfere with the charger ? Is it more cost-effective to change the refrigerator to a three-way ? Going to be in N Y and you can't run with gas on!

I would hook the inverter to the coach batteries. Just an inverter - not an inverter/charger - so just another load. No interaction other than increased load with the charge circuits.

I have not done this mod, but I do have a 400 watt "pure sine wave" inverter connected to my coach batteries. Use it to recharge e-bike batteries, run my wife's "Magic Bullet" food processor, operate my wife's heating pad (bad back), run a soldering iron if needed, etc. Works great.

Not aware of any state not allowing driving with propane on. A couple of tunnels and the Alaska ferry system do require propane off. I found on the Alaska ferry my refrigerator maintained cold quite well for 12+ hours (door not opened, RV on car deck so no sun). I just turn mine off when necessary- for instance, while staying overnight in a friend's driveway where I can't level. Seems to hold cold overnight without issue.

Are you concerned with amount of gas usage or just running with gas on? Fridge uses very little gas. The flame is only about an inch or so wide.

With regard to cost, as the refrigerator heater is a resistive load, I believe a modified sine wave inverter should work, like:
https://www.amazon.com/BESTEK-Power-...+wave+inverter

Quite inexpensive. I did run into a surprise using a modified sine wave inverter - my wife's heating pad did not work - controller issue. I switched to a pure sine wave for that reason:
https://www.amazon.com/Wagan-EL2601-...pure+sine+wave

Seems like pure sine wave inverters have been dropping in price.

As I said, I have not done this mod. If you do it, let us know how it works!

FYI
Jim
