Filling up fresh water tank

On my way south this year we decided to use more flying J as night stop vice camp ground. To my surprise expecting to fill my FW at the same time as flushing my BW/GW notice they have signs that the water is not potable. Where do you guys fill up FW?

I usually fill at home. We run with fresh water about 1/3 full. 1/3 is enough for one shower each and enough to make our destination or a camp ground. I fill up again to 1/3 tank. We stay at Walmart sometimes. Never thought about Flying J. Do you put your slides out?

Did you ask inside at the Flying J about water?? They have showers and restrooms so you know there is potable water there somewhere.

Funny. I had the same problem. Most Flying J's say that the water is non-potable. On exiting one in South Carolina I noticed a gas station with a hose out back. Went in asked if I could buy some water and was told to take all I wanted...free of charge.

As a warning to all of those who head south from freezing northern temperatures, on leaving upstate NY I continually looked for water and had to stop at an RV retailer...IN TENNESSEE, who finally gave me some water. Northern stops told me their water was turned off, even though they always had freeze proof faucets. Bouncing around south Florida I have discovered that gas, propane and dumps are easy to come by. It is fresh water that takes some real digging!

tilap we have three small dogs so we always try and open the slides when we stopped at night. One of the main reasons for the new Georgetown is the king size bed. As you know they're worse than children but we wouldn't travel without them.

Normally, the water available nearby the wastewater disposal location (the dump station) is considered non-potable because of the easy possibility that the hose nozzle and faucet handle are contaminated during dumping and cleanup. This is good hygiene practice, even if the water supplied to this spot is otherwise potable. Thus, the "non potable" sign.

Other times this water really is from a different source that is non potable. Either way, don't put water labeled "non potable" in your water tank.

Richard is correct. The water is most likely the same water as what is in the building, etc. The law is that if the water hose is within a certain distance to a contamination source. It must be signed non potable. They must also have vacuum breakers to prevent any back flow. That hose is for rinsing the dump hose and spillage only.
