First Trip

Hello everyone. Scheduled to pickup my new Georgetown on Wednesday
and am in the processs of planning my first trip, leaving next weekend. Was thinking of Skyline Drive and Shenadoah National Park. Any tips for driving on Skyline Drive? I understand the tunnel at Mary's Rock has a 12'8" clearance. The spec sheet on my Georgetown reads 12"3". Seems a little tight to me. Also, will it be really crowded or are we past peak driving season? Any campground reccommendations? Any parking areas for rvs at Monticello? I understand Enterprise has some car rental locations in the area. Would it be better to have a base camp and use the car for touring? Any advice would be appreciated.

About Skyline Drive-have a full tank of gas and good brakes when you come off/down the mtn. They park tour buses at Monticello so parking shouldn't be a problem. Be sure and eat at the rest. right before going into the entrance of Monticello. WOW!

I set up in a campground in Ashville N.C. and traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway in both directions in two days.I was very glad I decided not to take the big rig.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful road........probably one of the best, as long as you're not in a hurry. Lots of scenic lookouts, and some are not accessible to RVs.

Do yourself a favor and park the rig. The BRP is best enjoyed by car, as some of the facilities and pull outs are not that big. There's lots of hills that will cost you in gas when climbing, and give your brakes a workout on the descent. This is not a journey for you to "cut your teeth on" with a new rig. Lots of bicyclists and motorcycles frequent the route too. The worst part with the bicyclists, is that there are a number of tunnels (especially in the lower half of the park) that are completely "black" inside and it's impossible to see the bicycles inside. Some of the tunnels are straight and you can see end to end, but the ones that curve can be unnerving.

Enjoy the BRP.......but not in the rig!

Thanks for the input. Enterprise has several locations in the area so until I get my toad I will rent.
