Frigidaire Secondary Ice Maker Install

I've seen a few posts regarding the installation of a secondary ice maker in the Frigidaire French door counter depth residential fridge that comes in many of our Georgetowns.

I did mine a few weeks ago and I thought a detailed tutorial would help some of you that are on the fence. The install took less than 20 minutes.

1) Unwrap all the parts included in the kit and familiarize yourself with the instructions.

2) Attach the included mounting bracket to the ice maker using the 3 provided screws. Make sure to properly route the power cable as shown in the instructions.

3) Open the freezer drawer and locate the 3 plastic plugs on the upper left side. Now carefully pry them out with a flat blade screw driver or spatula.

4) Screw the 2 included mounting stud screws into the 2 back holes revealed by the plugs you removed.

5) Locate the cover panel on the back wall of the freezer. Remove the 3 bolts holding it in place. It may be difficult to reach but I managed without removing the freezer door.

6) Install the ice maker by first plugging in the power cord into the receptacle located under the cover you removed, then slide it onto the stud screws screws so that they engage the key hole slots on the mounting bracket. Pay particular attention to the rear one as it must be properly engaged. When properly mounted, install the screw from the kit in the front hole to secure the unit.

7) Position the wire and panel so that everything is properly routed and attached, then reinstall the 3 mounting screws.

8) Lower the ice maker arm to start the ice maker and get a large container that can be filled by the front water dispenser. Run the dispenser until you get a solid air free stream of water.

The last step is critical and probably the source of most complaints. You need to eliminate as much air in the system as possible otherwise it will only be purged every ice cycle, which can take a lot of time.

Please note that there are no water tubes to install. Plugging in the ice maker activates a solenoid that feeds water through the preinstalled water chute. I say chute because it is a half pipe similar to a water slide.

I am loving the ice maker, we have a large family and the front one runs out quite fast. I also like the bigger and clearer ice it produces.

Just checked and it looks like it's out of stock. I paid $60.00 shipped. You can either wait or do a search for:

Frigidaire Counter Depth Icemaker Kit IMK0023A

or just

IMK0023A

You should get plenty of results, it's very common. You can probably find it at Lowes for $80.00.

For those of you who have installed the second ice maker do you gain the ability to separately control the ice makers? In other words when you select "fast freeze" for ice or turn the ice maker "on" or "off" are you able to select one ice maker or the other or both?

The bottom ice maker is controlled separately by raising or lowering the bar like on a traditional ice maker. I believe the fast-freeze applies to the door ice maker only.
