Front A/C issue

Went to check on our motor home this morning and to exercise the generator and the front A/C was blowing hot air...bummer. The fans work on all settings and you can hear the compressor kick in after the normal delay, but the air temp never cools down. My guess is it's lost it's coolant. Rear air is fine. Made an appointment with our dealer on 9-10. At least it happened under warranty.

Hijack post: what do others use as a thermometer to put up close and measure temperatures at output?
My BR ac is freezing cold BUT U have concerns regarding main ac. Need to check before end of summer and 2 year Dometic and FR Warranty!
What say you?

To check the temperature of the air vents, I use a non-contact infrared thermometer.

I have a 2015 Georgetown 378XL with the optional bigger fron AC unit. When the weather was in the high 90's the unit started blowing hot air. I called a local ac repair to look at the unit. They had to install a valve to the unit in order to check and install the proper cooling freon. Today I went out to the motorhome and once again it was blowing warm air. I went to mt local RV repair shop and they informed me that I had voided my warranty by letting the ac serviceman install that valve. How the hell are you suppossed to check and install freon? The RV shop they just pull the unit and replace with a new unit. This don't sound right to me.

These RV roof air conditioners are unfortunately considered by the industry as being disposable rather than serviceable. They are not like automotive or building central air conditioners that have valves for adding refrigerant. Many other consumer products such as window air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, etc. are the same. The refrigerant is added during the assembly process, and the copper tubing is crimped and brazed shut.

This Spring I also had to replace my front roof air conditioner. I took off the shroud cover and could see where the refrigerant had leaked at a brazed "T" connector on the copper tubing. My kid and I installed a new roof upper unit for $430. It was actually pretty straightforward and took less than an hour. The new one worked with the existing relay board box and interior ceiling vent.

If such is the case why are they using such cheap components on a vehicle that you have paid in excess of $100,000.00 dollars for and they don't tell you that it isn't a serviceable item. I worked in the automotive AC business most of my life and if the automotive industry had used such a cheap system the AC unit wouldn't have become standard equipment and to have your warranty voided because you tried to get it fixed is unreasonable.

I had to get the unit working immediately as my wife is handicapped and couldn't be sitting in an overheated cabin much less find a dealer to work on the vehicle.

I contacted Domestic AC and they agreed that indeed I had violated my warranty on my AC unit. However due to my circumstances they have agreed to pay for the repair or replacement of my unit.

I also had an excellent support experience with Dometic. They are VERY concerned about customer satisfaction. They went overboard in resolving my A/C issue.
