full time in our 378, mattress issues

Hello, due to circumstances (we are building a new custom home and we already had the 2011 378) we are full time in our 378 but the wife hates the Serta RV mattress that came in it. Anyone else make a change and if so, what did you end up using?

Thanks to all
Ray and Cynthia

We are full timing in our fifth wheel and we added a 2" memory foam topper to the mattress. We were happy with it and the comfort level it provided. Then a friend gave us a next to new regular Serta home mattress, so we put that in the coach with the memory foam topper and have been very satisfied with it. It is a little taller than the rv mattress, but still fits and works well.

If you replace it make sure to get a short or the slide won't close.... I'm 6'4" so we made a removable 4 inch foam insert that we place along the headboard end and remove when we pull the slide in. No more dangling tosies.

Thanks, great idea, I am 6' 4" myself and it is a little uncomfortable on the ankles. We were thinking about getting an 8" memory foam mattress (we have a king size Temperpedic at home) to replace the Serta but a topper might be the way to go.....

I agree that a memory foam topper will make a world of difference.

We purchased a sleep number mattress, the one without the built in topper, and still ended up putting a 4" topper on it. It made for a very comfortable bed, but still too short for someone 6'2" tall. the coach we have now has a 78" by 80" king sized bed in it. One of the reasons we got it.

We replaced the original mattress in our '09 378 with an 8" memory foam (full queen) that we ordered from Sam's club for $300. The DW likes it better than the $2000 sleep number we have at home. The slide still closes ok. It just compresses the mattress some. It springs back into shape when the slide is opened.

I would try a good topper. We did that with our fifth wheel and it worked real well. I our Georgetown we had the mattress that they used in the early 2012 models before they switched to the Serta. Even with a topper we had such sore backs we went to Camping World and bought a short queen memory foam mattress. We found that solved our problem. We could have ordered one from the internet for less money but did not want to wait for delivery. We gave Forest River a copy of the bill and they gave us a cheque for what it costs them for the Serta.

OMG, the mattresses than come with RVs are torture devices from the medieval era...

After just one night sleeping on the one that came with our trailer, we found a mattress shop near the campgound and bought an 8" memory foam one. Being at a c/g, I used the sharpest kitchen knife we had and shortened the mattress to match the original. I've meant to round the corners at one end, but haven't bothered yet.

Ooooh, what a difference! Even the pet dog loves it so much, we're having trouble keeping him off! He's never growled in his life until we tried to get him off one day....

The new mattress cost us only $199. We think maybe they had it priced wrong since a lot of others seem to cost much more. We also managed to sell the original torture mattress for $50 on CL so the upgade did not cost that much.

I might also mention that we bought a couple of wedge pillows (24x24x8") so we can sit in the bed comfortably and watch TV. (The headboard end of many RVs slopes in the wrong direction for sitting up.) Now, lounging in bed is like being in heaven.

I guess we are wierd, we luv the mattress that came with our 2012 378, four inches longer and it would have been perfect but that was an easy fix. Wonder if they use different mattresses for different styles of units.....

After trying a mattress topper, which did not work for us, I bought the Avena memory foam mattress from Camping World, which is great. They have the 90 day return policy, as long as it is in original condition, so if you don't like it you can return it. The store did say that policy did not generally apply to mattresses, but it was up to the store manager to approve the return, so I would ask about that before I bought it if that is a concern.

We have a 2012 Georgetown 337. The mattress is horrible. We have been using two twin air mattresses under it. We are now looking at buying a new mattress. Does anyone know when FR changed to the Serta mattress?

We didn't get the Serta in our early 2012 Georgetown but I know that by April 2012 they had changed to the Serta. We did get a check from Forest River for part of the cost of a new mattress.

Thanks for the info. We bought ours in July 2011. Had some odds and ends problems, but really like it overall. Happy camping!

Thanks for the info. We were at Camping World in Nashville today hoping they would have one to try out - no such luck.
