generator problems

I have a georgetown 351 with a 5.5 onan generator. On this trip the generator would not run both a/c at once even when turning them on after one has been running for a while. also the could not use the microwave and a/c at the same time. my last rv had a 4 kw it only had one a/c but i could use everything without tripping breakers. In the past the generator would run all these things at once what could be wrong with it?

Make sure your water heater is on propane only and if you have a residential refrigerator that adds to the amps draw on generator......

I've had the same issue since new on my 2013 351 XL..... 15K miles, not fixed yet....

Look at the front of the genny once you take the cover off there is two breakers make sure they are both on and not tripped.

Check your breakers. Not for the fact they maybe tripped, but if there's any kind of loose of vibrating wire it could cause a trip. Our last one had to have the entire breaker box replaced. It tripped with one A/C and other issues. After the box was replaced we never had a problem again. But that was just our problem.

On mine, it's not tripping the breakers on the generator or at the breaker panel inside, the transfer switch disengages. And can't pull back in because of the load of the a/c units. Have to turn off the a/c's, let transfer switch pull back in and then turn a/c back on, do this every time you hit a bump on the highway for 885 miles in one day and it's gets beyond old!!!!

Then it is time for a transfer switch I guess unless someone can come up with a reason this is doing this other than a bad switch.

It's had 2 already... The orginal one from the factory and I replaced it with a new one from Furrion that they sent me direct.

Our issue was the genny would turn itself off after about 30 minutes - it just spent a week at Cummins and they couldn't make it turn off (micro, both AC going was still fine)

Had them change the oil, and filters(oil,fuel & air) just since it was in for the work, and it was fine on the way home.

True test will be on Friday when we head out camping......

Now you do know that the amperage doesn't change on the AC or go down after startup. These are not house AC units with compressors.
They pull constant amps so turning one on then another doesn't really do much.
My 15,000 BTU unit pulls about 19 amps, My 13,500 pull 17 amps and that's 36 amps. My 5500 Onan has a max amps of 46 amp on the label.
So a microwave could put it over as mine is pulls 1600 watts which is 13.3 amps at 120 volts.
So that totals 49 amps and will trip your generator breaker.


I just don't run everything as once which solves any overloads.
