Generator Question 328tsf

Hey Gang,

I just change the oil in our Gen - ONAN 5500 (First Oil Change). I used the Onan Filter along with the 15w-40 ONAMAX Oil! We live in SWPA so this seems to be the best fit oil viscosity for us.

After I changed the oil & filter it seems to be running hot (smells hot). It was about 90 degrees outside. I ran the gen for about an hour with both AC Units running. She performed very well, just smelled hot.. Is this normal?

Any thoughts?

Thanks...

I just purchased 2 of the Onan 122-0836 Oil Filter from Amazon for 12.00 free shipping.
The Gen has 45 hours on it. Was going to use the recommended oil for the standard Florida Climate since this is my usual haunting grounds.
Does anyone have recommendations at to what Weight?
They say SAE 30 for our climate.
Also what do you all recommend for changing intervals?

Could you have spilled some oil that is not getting hot when the unit runs?
Any error codes showing up when you run the unit?

What did you think of removing the filter as most of it is buried in stuff. I used a filter wrench when I did mine, it almost did not work. I saw some things that you can put on the bottom of the filter, like a cap, that fits onto a socket wrench. That may be my next purchase.

I'm pretty careful of not spilling any oil. I always keep a rag under the fill opening in case I spill any.

We spent the night at a rest stop Friday night on our way to Myrtle Beach. Ran the gen for 10 hours with no issues.

Oil Filter removal wasn't to bad. I used an adjustable oil filter wrench from my golf cart. Putting the filter back was tricky. Not much room to get your hands on the filter. The do make an oil filter wrench like indicated. I'll be buying in for the next change.

Does anyone know what weight oil they put in from the factory??
Or should I just change it and be done with it.

Page 8 of the Operator Manual (attached) specifies Class SJ, SH or SG engine oil.

For Ambient Temperatures 32F or higher use SAE 30 (preferred)

For 10 degrees F to 100 degrees F use 15W-40 (OnaMax)
