Glass Vanity Sink in 2014 378XL Exploded

Walked into our Georgetown motor home and could not figure out what was all over the floor, looked like pale blue crystals. The round glass vanity sink had exploded! There was glass thrown in the bedroom, hall & kitchen. Was in it yesterday & it was intact. Could find nothing that may have fallen on it. It was quite warm in Central Illinois yesterday but we had left our 3 roof vents opened to allow the heat to escape. Are these sinks residential or RV? Don't think we want to put in another glass bowl like this one. If we had been in there when this happened someone could have been very badly hurt! Has there been a recall n these sinks?

Wow that is shocking. We have a 2015 with three of these sinks. During storage in FL, temps have gotten well over 100 degrees in our Georgetown. I thought I had read at some point they had a bad batch of these sinks. We'll see but man what a mess. Sorry this happened to you.

Consumer Reports has several articles and YouTube videos on exploding vessel sinks. Not just an RV issue. From NBC:

It's tempered glass. No one would have been hurt. That's the point of tempered glass.

The reason is probably nickel sulfate impurities in the glass that lead to spontaneous breakage. It is a material defect in the glass. If you would have been in the unit, you would not have gotten hurt but the noise would have scared the heck out of you!

That's what I was thinking. Tempered or not......... fast flying projectiles can do damage to your face & eyes. Or what about a small child!

I am a glass artist and work with kiln fired glass all the time...glass from different sources will have different coefficients of expansion...not to get technical with you but simply put if the firing schedule for the glass is not carefully monitored especially on the way down stress will be built into the glass. Weeks or even months after cooling the stresses will cause the glass to fracture along the stress lines. This sounds like what happened to you...a poor mix of glass and improper firing.

As mentioned, if process is not controlled properly a large amount of stress is built up and stored in the glass. That stress is released randomly in the form of an explosion of the glass.

Happened to our 2014 378 XL last year, went with Ceramic rectangular above counter sink from Lowes for a little over $100 and Forest River reimbursed and said that there was a bad batch of Glass as others have explained.

Internally stressed tempered glass does not fly, it simply cracks into million pieces and drops.

Similar to a car window.
