I think you are talking about the 'sail switch' (?)
It relies on a certain amount of air flow to make a connection.
If the sail switch has debris on it... dust or insect nests.. it will not 'sail' in the air flow and make that necessary connection.. thus it will shut down after a run period to confirm the burner is cool.
You may have a good plan there to put a (thin) air filter material to stop anything to accumulate on the sail switch.
