High Pitched Noise Battery Control Center

Hi all... we have a 2019 Georgetown 378XL. Noticed a high pitched noise coming from the BCC below the exit steps this morning. Turned power off, disconnected BCC, waited a while. Turned all back on and high pitched noise returned. Any thoughts on what the noise is? Remedies?

Are you saying you pulled the cover off the battery control center and disconnected it or are you saying you disconnected your batteries with the battery disconnect switch?

This is the Battery Control Center (BCC) under your steps.

Disconnect

I used the disconnect switch. Turned shore power off. All shut down, then turned all back on and the noise returned. It just stated this morning, and is coming from the BCC. I did not open the BCC.

I believe there are 3 relays in the BCC. The ignition relay/interconnect relay and battery disconnect relay. With all power on and batteries not disconnected actuate your emergency start switch momentarily to see if the noise stops. If not, set the ignition switch momentarily to on to see if noise stops. If not, switch the battery disconnect switch off and on a few times. Relay chatter can happen for a number of reasons and exercising the switching function (energizing coil) sometimes clears the issue. Sometimes it is also hard to tell where a hum such as you have is actually coming from. NOTE: If the screen door is closed the steps will retract if the ignition switch is set to on even if the step switch is on.

The noise stopped for a while, then started again. Tried all of the recommended steps but did not have success. High pitched whine still present... Any other thoughts? Might have to have a technician look it over, but we travel tomorrow, so maybe a road ride might make it go away???

If it is a relay the only one in the BCC that would have a delay is the interconnect relay. This relay is used for the emergency start function but primarily it is what ties the coach and chassis batteries together for charging. There is a circuit in the BCC that controls when this relay actuates after a delay for charging all the batteries. This is a simplified description of the works. The issue may clear itself as you suggest. It's hard for me assist in troubleshooting this kind of an issue from afar. Maybe someone else can assist. Good luck.

Wink Battery Management

I went to the manufacturer's web site rvcustom@verizon.net and clicked on products, then went to the SDC107A. This brought up the usual sales info, but also access to four .pdf documents, which may be downloaded. Among them is a test procedure for FR, and a detailed connection diagram.

Your problem may well be a small relay with a poor soldered connection (acting as a high pitched buzzer) or possibly a wrong connection from FR. I would start troubleshooting according to the test procedure, and then pulling all of the fuses on the unit, and if the noise is gone, try adding them back 'till it returns. Find out what circuit that fuse protects, and you will at least have some good info to give if you need to contact RV Custom. Their phone number is on the web site.

Found It !!!

Finally had a mobile technician come and check out our high pitch sound issue. We tested all of the battery connections, everything at 13.7.

After looking more, the sound was coming from the other side of the coach. Yes, it was the ProWatt inverter, located above the propane tank. We removed the water cover and found that the inverter was not fastened down when manufactured. The inverter bounced around and was upside down. Removed it and the noise went away, but the smell from the inverter was like burnt plastic.

Bottom line, it was toast. Did not work when turned on. This has been an issue for us since we purchased the coach. Never had the refrigerator on while in transit because the inverter never worked.

Replaced, and Forest River Warranty Manager Nicholas Hoover is great! Very responsive and helpful. His email is nhoover@forestriverinc.com
