Hit a Deer

My wife, grandson and I left this morning for a trip to the Oregon Coast. Didn't get 30 miles from home and I hit a big ole mule deer doe going 55 MPH. No way to avoid. Needless to say, it tore up my fiberglass big time. What surprised me is that part of the windshield separated from the frame. I could see daylight. Needless to say it put an end to our trip. Still driveable so took it into a shop this afternoon. Waiting for the insurance adjuster to look at it and approve repairs. Have no idea yet what it will cost. So now we're going to jump in the car and make the same trip, only motel it. Just isn't the same!!

Lots of road kills in Oregon along HWY 97 which goes through Bend, Where I live. Most occur at night. Deer fences have been built for 20 miles South of Bend. They are also clearing brush and trees 100' off the road. Unfortunately, none of that helped me. I really do feel bad for the deer I killed!

When you get a chance, can you post some pictures of the damage?

A friend of mine, who drives all over Iowa for his job, swears by "deer whistles" on his front bumper. Says the only time he ever hit a deer was in his station wagon, without them. Claims that when he sees a deer on the side of the road, they ALWAYS stop, looking for that high-pitched, unable-to-be-heard-by-humans whistling noise.

He's made a believer out of me...had 'em on my current truck since I bought it.

Shame about your damage, Krazymace. Glad nobody was hurt.

Simply need to keep the bugs cleaned out of your deer whistles or they tend to get plugged up and stop working.

Spent 5 days in Salina, Kansas last May after an encounter with a large doe. Doing 65 with a Stealth toy hauler towed by a 14 Toyota Tundra with 3800 miles on it. Had just enough time to say, "Oh S---". Better to plow em down than swerve. 12K in damages, covered by insurance after $500 ded. Feel lucky.

In our home neighborhood, there are a lot of black-tail deer. When we walk our two Labs every morning, we'll see at least 20 deer, many (at this time of year) with very young fawns - still with their spots. We see them in our front yard frequently, and all our chrysanthemums are already gone - deer snacks!

Locals have become accustomed to their presence, and we don't have many accidents, except on the main drag from I-5 along SR-20 and out to the State Ferry Terminal. One or two a month get creamed there.

I'm looking at 3 in my back yard as we speak. Despite my accident today, I truly love to live in a place where I can see wildlife as a part of my daily activities.

Sorry to hear about the accident. That stinks.

I've been an Iowa guy for the entire 37 years of my life... and I know for a fact deer whistles do not work so don't waste your money. I've hit 2 in my lifetime, and many friends and family have hit multiples as well, many had whistles mounted.

Hitting deer is just a part of living in Iowa.
On the flip-side, I really enjoy hunting our fantastic population of deer in this state.

I also live in IA and the deer are dangerous at dawn and dusk. I had a new rented dodge pickup one day and hit a deer at daylight 4,000 damage, bummer.

How fast were you going when you hit it? I expected to see a lot worse damage. That front end must be pretty tough.
