Hott Rod
I have seen an gizmo advertised that fits into the water heater anode rod position that is an electric heating element and supposedly converts an LPG water heater into an electric.
Has anybody tried this thing? Does it work?

Never tried one or know anyone that has. But I did see one at Camping World in Forth Worth yesterday.

Yeah they work fine.
If you're on shore power most of the time and you have an
LP gas only water heater they are a good up-grade.
You can find them on Amazon.com as well as camping world
and your local RV parts and accessories counter.

Yes they do work but remember you now have no anode rod so depending on your water heater, and the quality of water, you may be replacing it sooner than you think. Personally, a little more propane is cheaper than a new water heater.

With the Lightning Rod kit you do still have an anode. It's smaller so you'll have to replace it more often but there is one there.
It's a coaxial design where lightning rod anode is the same diameter as the old one but shorter. It's got a hole in the center of it for the heating element to fit through.

WOW! I do, thanks alot. Looked at the other posting and saw the pic. Checked my GAS Water Heater Operating manual and sure enough, there is the switch all pinned out so I couldn't start up MT and blow the element.
Thanks, this forum is the best!

I too was amazed that the 2011 models didn't have a gas/electric water heater also, because it wasn't listed as such in their literature. And, most of the salesmen don't know. But, of course it is gas/electric on all of the new ones.

On my 2008 my waterheater is LP only. I assume because it's the SE model. So once of these after-market hating elements might be a fun project sometime soon.
