How much grease for the steering box?

I greased all the points on my F53 chassis yesterday. Point #9 took a lot of grease and wasn't ever coming out anywhere. Usually when I grease I Pump until it starts to come out then Pump 3 more times to push old dirty grease out. #9 just kept pumping and pumping. Anyone know where the relief for this one is? Where does it start to oooz out

Well the diagram won't upload. It's the highest zerk on the steering box

How old is your chassis? I think the upper fitting gets missed because no one knows its up there and its not obvious.

When I greased mine, it took a lot of grease and there was no sign this fitting ever seen a grease gun (18 year sold)

It won't do MACH 2, but I can get a sandwich and take a pee.

If you are referring the fitting actually on the steering box, it is a vent and is not to be greased. You can blow the seals out on the box.

Point number 9 on the diagram I would say is supposed to be greased since it is #9 grease point. I was told not much but ours took a lot also

[emoji106]#9 looks like it's pointing at the bolt that holds the pitman arm on. I don't have my coach here to look at. Ive worked in a truck shop for 26+ years and a local rebuilder told us to never grease the fitting that screws directly into the steering gear. Now I'm really confused!!

Not a bolt if you look at your rig. It is a zerk fitting that most don't see. Take a closer look when you are under your rig.

Here is a picture of the fitting.

Sure enough. I found a different lubrication chart somewhere on line and it pointed there instead of the bolt. Some say it's under a rubber grommet.

That fitting allows grease to push out contaminates, salt and dirt along the out put shaft of the steering gear. It keeps them away from the seal surface of the out put shaft so the shaft doesn't corrode. It is not really there from lubrication purposes. The grease will exit the area between the inside of the pitman arm and the gear housing around its whole circumference. You don't have to give it alot of grease just a couple squirts if you are consistent with lubricating. Otherwise, a few more squirts if you are not. The "rubber grommet" is just a cap to keep contaminates off of the fitting.

This very comes with a plastic or rubber cap when the coach is new. Mine did not get greased the first two years even though I had it serviced by a Ford truck dealer. I saw the zert on the diagram posted here. I had thought there were only 8 seats before seeing the pic posted on this site. I give it a couple shots each year.
