How to avoid most noisy down shifts

First, if you are driving in an area of rolling hills, turn off the cruise control. Second, even if you are in cruise control, for a moderate hill you can always step on the gas pedal just enough to gain some speed as you approach the hill and most of the time you can top the hill without a downshift. Thirdly, when I forget to use the gas pedal and the coach downshifts I quickly tap the brake pedal which stops the cruise control and the rpm immediately drops to normal. And lastly, going up or down a long grade use tow/haul mode to mostly limit downshifts to a single gear at a time. Remember, just because you are in cruise control does not mean you can't use the gas pedal to prevent those two gear downshifts. Speed up a little on the downhill and you will crest average sized hills without a downshift.

I eliminated a lot of the "nuisance" downshifting with a 5 Star Tune. And when it does need to shift they are a lot smoother, going from 5th to 4th instead of 5th to 3rd. Before the tune it would downshift if it thought it saw a rise in the road. That has been eliminated.

Also, Taping the Resume button on the steering wheel will disengage the cruise just like tapping the brake pedal, without flashing the brake lights.

Taping the resume button to shut off cruise doesn't work on all chassis. For some reason it doesn't do that on my 2008 georgetown 373. Read on the IRV2 forum that it doesn't work for others with the F53 as well. Guess I'll have to keep taping the brake or shut the cruise off and reset on the other side. I also have the 5-star tune and have found it does go into 4th now instead of immediately into 3rd.

Send a message via Yahoo to carluv
I suggest you don't shift into tow/haul mode while going up or down a hill. Did that with my truck one time towing a 35 ft TT and the transmission electronics dumped all the shift codes. When I slowed for a light, it went from high gear to first and I thought the transmission was going to fall out. Had to take it to Ford and get it re programed.
