I'll put the picture in, on the camera at home and I'm at work...lol.

This is for the shoulder bolt that breaks right at the threads, which holds the gear in place, not for the ball joint assembly. Use cutting oil because it does get quite hot.

Hardest part was drilling through the bolt threads that were welded. We ended up stepping up bits so we didn't eat through my 5/8 so quickly. Also, we had to remove the stairs to get a good angle to drill, much easier and you aren't eating metal shavings the whole time.

This is the double ball joint bolt that broke on me. Note, $48.12!

LCI Steps on GT

Yah. Mine broke at the same place. The bolt should have had a bracket on both ends to support the bending action create by the gear. Anybody in their right mind should have realized that. I am on my forth set of steps in 12 months since we bought ours new last year. If it breaks again I am going to design their steps with added bracing and send them pictures.

Did you contact fr concerning this? You might luck out and get new steps considering this is an ongoing problem..

They replaced ours with a Kwikee after two broken bolts when we were at the Frog Rally last year.

Falcon, were you still under warranty though, or perhaps just out of it. I have been in contact with Forest River about mine, mentioning that I and my wife took headers off the broken steps, asking what help can Forest River be in alleviating a very dangerous situation with these very poorly engineered steps.

It was out warranty, our coach is a 2012 but we bought it in the spring of 2011. The rally was August 2013. I had seen on this form that FR were replacing some steps at the rally. I had sent in my list for service so I sent an email to April and she told me they would try to fit me in and they did. If I were you I would contact them and in very non confrontational style ask them if they could help you. I have had several things repaired by FR after the warranty had run out. The Rally is a good time to have thinks looked after.

Yah, I wish we were closer to FR but we are 1400 miles away. The first time they broke the steps were only 2 months old and I call LCI directly and they shipped me new steps quickly and paid me to install them. Then I started to see on this forum about their steps. But each time after that I had a dealer replace them. Each time the dealer always replaced them with LCI steps and telling me they have always had problems with Kwikee steps and that FR only authorizes LCI step replacements.
Now I hear Lippert bought out Kwikee. So now what, when my steps break again, what am I going to do?
By the way my steps are starting to feel more spongy every week.
I still have the original steps that I thought about replacing the gear bolt and adding an outside bracket and thicker bolt, which should have been done on the original design then take a picture of it an send to Lippert and tell them to get their act together before more people get hurt.
By the way I did file a report with the Nation Highway Traffic Safety Administration in which I highly recommend everyone to do that has an issue with these steps. Here is their address.
