Check electrolyte levels. Overcharging can also cause this.

That is caused by the batteries off-gassing and the condensed particles reacting on the metal. While all lead-acid batteries will off-gas some, a battery that is constantly being overcharged will actually boil out. Additionally, a battery that is allowed to "sulphate" (go into deep discharge for long periods), will also cause this situation.

1. Check for overcharging condition. Correct as required.

2. Remove the batteries and hardware and clean vigorously with baking soda and water, including compartments. Allow to dry completely.

3. Thoroughly clean-up all hardware (remove corrosion), and repaint hold-down hardware with a good coat of oil based enamel paint. Wire brush terminals and connections and coat with Dow 5-Compound.

It can also be a weak cell in the battery causing it to boil and gas-off. A battery that is "exercised"...used very hard.... rode hard and put up wet can cause the gassing as well. I hot charger and a low battery(as mentioned) will gas more. You can buy corrosion inhibitor spray and paint the stuff, but it is messy.

If it is just the one battery... I am going with weak battery. YMMV

I have a Progressive Dynamics with the charge wizard. A little nervous of doing too much water in there to clean this mess, there are a lot of electrical connections in there. Soon as it warms up I will get busy and clean this mess up. Thanks for all the responses.

As has been mentioned above....check water levels in batteries. Do not overfill these batteries or this can happen, too.

I’m confused by the mention of checking water levels... I thought AGMs were sealed? Or am I mistaken?

Agreed, from the photos shown, they are not AGM. I will bet if you remove the fill caps they will be low on water. They should be filled to the collars in the fill tubes with distilled water, this should help if u have not already fried them.

I think he is asking if switching to AGM batteries will solve this.
