Miles per day

Just curious how many miles/hours per day do you drive your RV? Is there a certain time you like to head out? I have always waited until after rush hour. We usually get off the road around 5pm. Trying to guesstimate a 2,000 mile trip.

If we're not under a time crunch, we plan on 200 - 250 miles per day. That's about what we did coming back to Virginia Beach from SE Florida.

We do 300 to 350 depending on how far apart cg are that we plan to make. Usally we are at the cg by 3pm. Later RJD

My preferred distance is 'slightly less than a tank of fuel'. I don't really relish the idea of pulling through a gas station, especially since it's a gasser, and there's not a lot out there setup for handling rigs. My preferred plan is to fill the truck the night before, and be able to drop the trailer at the campground before having to fill it again. This puts me in the 250-270 mile range with the 1/2 ton. And I've only filled the 3/4 ton 3 times so far, but it's looking to be about the same range.

That being said, we've got a few trips planned this year that are going to violate that rule, because I'm also trying to convince the DW to broaden our range and see more than what we can find in a 4 hour driving radius.

Edit: Opps, sorry, just realized this was in a Motorhome section. Ok, so my problems aren't your problems, you need to fit in a gas station either way, but still, it is what I do.

Since I still have a job and must use leave time I make the most of travel days. On long trips from Ohio I will go 12 -13 hours and cover around 800 - 900 miles. I usually stop for gas twice since I try to fill-up before stopping for the day.

I plan my trips when towing DW's car on the dolly at 400 miles per leg. That being said, if I'm feeling good and fresh still at 400 I'll try and stretch it. That way either the next leg will be shorter, or we'll arrive at our destination sooner. If traveling by interstate for the whole trip minus local streets to and from the interstate I use 60 mph average speed as my time and distance estimate. As a side note, when we are about 60-90 minutes out from calling it a day and we plan on staying at a campground vs rest stop or Walmart my DW will use the RVParky phone app to start looking for a suitable CG for the night.

So as you can see that the simple question has many answer depending upon many factors.

Age
What part of the country. Crossing Texas or Crossing Maine to New York
Time of the week
Full Trip time allowance
Interstate or Routes
Readily available gas stations
Weather
Driving into the sun in morning or driving into sun at end of day.

For me (age67) I can handle Interstate or routes driving 250 to 350 miles.
I have driven close to 400 miles but that was a very long day and slept in the next morning. I usually stop at least every 100 miles.
We also stop and have lunch and relax.

I usually try and get to campground between 2pm and 3pm before the rest od you show up.
Setup and relax and have a dinner by 5 or 6 pm

So as you can see it all dependent upon all of the above on haw far you really need to drive in one day

Bottom line is you are suppose to enjoy the journey so slow down a bit and your day will be great.

If your average mph (which is drive time - stopping time ) is around 50 mph, it's going to take you around 40 hours.

If your average mph is closer to 45 mph, it's going to take you 45 hours.

For us, it's almost impossible to meet a schedule because driving conditions and the health of the driver on any particular day.

We try to drive around 300 miles per day which is 6 hours a day because we average 50 mph and it usually takes 6 to 10 days depending on conditions. That's assuming that we're doing a 'destination' trip.

To narrow everything else down I think it comes down to retired or still working.

We just finished a 32 day trip and the longest travel day we had was 550 miles. We started out around 6am in Dolores CO and ended up in Amarillo TX for the evening. We went long that day, so that our next day (final day) was shorter. If we stopped earlier the first day, we'd end up driving further on our last day, and we were not wanting to drive that far on the last day. We usually covered around 300 miles per day throughout the trip.

I budget 700 miles per day when going long distance. We are on the road by 6AM and only stop for fuel, meals and restroom breaks. We get off the road around 8pm. A 2000 mile trip would take us 2 full days and we would arrive at around 6:30pm on day 3.

WOW that's a lot of miles per day.
Oh wait you all have a PU and trailer which is much easier to drive.
Driving a 20,000 lb to 26,000 lb motorhomes with tow car is a little more stressful and 55-65 mph is nice cruising speed.
Also you must plan your stops as many places don't having parking for 55 ft total rigs with easy in and out.
Your vacation's must be time limited to drive that many miles daily.
Also it must be more difficult finding your spot in a campground so late in the day.
When you do have time, slow down and enjoy the ride to where ever you go.

700 miles is a long way to go each day. Me, the wife and the dog just can't take that much driving.

Absolutely!
It suppose to be a vacation to slow down and relax and enjoy the scenery and where ever you are going.
Someone that does that many miles must but be young and always rushing in his daily life.

Chill, slow down, relax, breath and smell the roses as they say.

Miles per day

For the most part our trips are usually within 6 hrs of home, 1 day drive. Have taken longer trips, ex. Tampa to Newport RI in 3 days and Tampa to New Orleans in 2 days.

That philosophy is fine when you are retired and have all the time in the world. For those of us who still work and have limited vacation time, long driving days are sometimes required if you want spend any quality time at your destination.
