Mystery slot

Can anyone help me understand the purpose of the slot in the countertop behind the stove in this picture (see arrows)?

Is this:
1) a place to store the slabs of countertop that cover the stove?
2) a vent for oven heat?
3) something entirely different?

Thanks for any guidance!
Eric

Our slot is sized right to store the stove top covers.

Pretty sure that's why it's there.

This one got Jeff curious ... so ... a cursory review of the Atwood Service / Installation documents indicates that there is NOT a requirement for any special vent slot behind the appliance. The OP's photo does show an Atwood model.

That said, might still check it with a thermometer (i.e. meat thermometer, probe thermometer) - supervising the exercise of course - to make sure that oven operation doesn't produce a temperature that migh damage what you could store there. Given most of the oven / range appliances have some sort of vents "behind" the burners, hence the grille between the back burners and the back of appliance, on top - that is probably where the heat from the oven gets out and the space behind the appliance is relatively safe.
