No Trucks Over 4 Tons

So I see signs like this one from time. Does anyone know how/if these apply to RVs? Do we qualify as "trucks"?

Not sure NJ knows how to define "Truck"

In our state the first section of our vehicle code is the definitions. This is where all that is sorted out. Not sure how NJ is but here you cannot just post those types of signs unless certain requirements are met.. That does not mean they do not just stick them in the ground.

These signs usually reference a bridge, culvert, or structure that is not stressed for weights over the posted limit. It doesn't say "Cars and Trucks" because cars do not weigh much over 2 tons.
It does not matter what your vehicle is, 4 tons of steel weighs the same as 4 tons of feathers.

The issue for me is there is one of those signs in my neighborhood. No bridges or anything... just a residential road.

I don't fully understand the wording on that sign. What are they excluded from? I would expect to see prohibited but not excluded. Is that a gross weight or an actual weight? I would think a one ton dually long bed with a diesel could come in over 4 tons actual weight.

I'm not sure I would worry about it.

I would go by the weight. NYS has country roads that restrict the weight of vehicles that travel on them, regardless of height obstructions.

What did your local traffic cop or city traffic engineer in New Jersey say when you asked him?

You can also look it up in this manual. It is what the various government agencies use.

In CA they put up similar signs quite a few years ago to keep big rigs from cutting through residential neighborhoods. However as a Hummer H2 tops out at 8600 lbs GVWR a lot of LA yuppies were technically not allowed to drive home....

They are referring to the weight carrying capacity of the truck, not the weight of the truck itself. For example a F350 is a one ton truck, etc. It is the large delivery trucks that are restricted so they don't beat up the road surface.

Do you have trash pickup? Utilities? Fire departments and rescue squads with trucks? I expect they use those roads.

Eric,

These signs are posted in residential areas & other areas (excluding bridges, etc.) to stop large truck traffic. The theory being that large trucks have load engines and/or knock tree branches off.

I have one on the entrance road to my development so I checked with the NJSP & the local police about it & they both said it wasn't an issue for me.

In my county, large trucks are prohibited in residential neighborhoods (although there are no signs saying so). I had to have a new well drilled and the driller had to obtain (i.e., purchase) a permit to bring his drilling truck into the neighborhood.

Of course, garbage trucks are either exempted or they are paying for a "permit," I'm not sure which.

I believe it's a song by the artist E.Town Concrete.
Likely put there by some fanatic.

In my city they use that type of sign on residential roads to restrict large commercial vehicles from using those streets as a bypass of congested intersections. we don't have any bridges or any other weight issues.

Our ares does not allow Semi-trucks to park for any longer than a delivery on our residential streets, but I can park my F350 and 42' 5ver for several days without any problems

If I was ever stopped, I would say that I assumed that the signs were for commercial vehicles and not RVs.

I used to ship large oversize and overweight vehicles for a living. I would not use the road if I were to see the sign, because it usually a weight restriction for a bridge or culvert. If you were to use it and something were to happen you would be held responsible for the repairs and I doubt that your insurance would cover it.

I would think it indicates it is a non truck route but you would want to clarify with local lawmakers.
